Though in Medusa's case, she was a gorgon before her human origin during the New 52s, and the Gorgoneion that adorns Aegis predates the whole Perseus thing. (Gorgoneions were a ward against evil from times immemorial before the oceans drank Atlantis and Poseidon was the all-father dude).
