It's true. Friend of mine has a politics degree from a world renowned university and still insists that capitalism existed in antiquity because people exchanged goods for currency.
Graebers “Debt” does a great job of deconstructing this. Econ 101 really creates so many brainworms.
This much better describes gift economies and pre-capitalist societies than it does capitalist ones, where the person giving you a haircut has to pay rent for the chair to a capitalist who doesn't have to do any labor at all.
