  • Translations – The Ben Fowkes translation is more modern. The one by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling is older, but some say purer. I don't have any real knowledge here, so could use advice.

Harvey's guide to reading it: https://www.davidharvey.org/media/Intro_A_Companion_to_Marxs_Capital.pdf

A University of Warwick guide to reading it: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/english/currentstudents/postgraduate/masters/modules/worldlitworldsystems/hotr.marxs_capital.untilp72.pdf

  • Time and tempo – Volume I is about 950 pages, so maybe four months? How does that sound? We could do all volumes within a year if we want to.

Roughly:

Volume I — 950 pages
Volume II — 500 pages
Volume III — 950 pages

1 year for all four is definitely possible, I think 4 months for 1000 pages is good.

250 pages/month is only like 20 pages/day.

As for the translation, I don't think that's super important on a first read. Having people join who have read other translations could give some insight, but I think those arguments are more for the scholars who read them all the time and want to argue about specific phrasing on a page and not the overall meaning of the text.

Also still kinda interested in running a Borchardt "People's Marx" reading group in parallel for anyone who drops out of the main group. So they have a 300 page fallback that gives them context that might help them get back into capital.

I'm interested in keeping general bookclubs going for this and that, for whatever people are interested in. But the Capital bookclub would be different (special, if you will), amd will repeat until the end of time.

In that case I think setting up a yearly schedule is perfect, lets people pick up on a regular schedule and we can start reusing and referencing old threads as we cycle back the next year and build on discussions from previous years.

The fowkes translation is easier to read imo
