On this day in 1837, Africans and Native Americans who had formed Florida's Seminole Nation decisively defeated an invading U.S. force more than twice their size, led by slaveowner and future U.S. president Zachary Taylor.

Since the founding of the U.S., escaped African slaves had settled in modern-day Florida. At the same time, Seminoles suffering under Creek rule in Alabama and Georgia were fleeing south to seek independence. There, the two groups formed an alliance, sharing cultivation techniques and putting up armed resistance against colonization and slaver forces.

The U.S. repeatedly invaded territory controlled by this alliance, and, on Christmas Day in 1837, 380 to 480 Seminole fighters gathered on the northeast corner of Florida's Lake Okeechobee ready to halt the armies of Colonel Zachary Taylor, a Louisiana slaveholder and future U.S. president.

Seminole riflemen waited for the soldiers in trees, firing on them from above. The battle was a decisive defeat for U.S. forces, however Taylor falsely claimed a victory when returning to Fort Gardner.

Listened to Bruce Springsteen concerts on Paramount Plus and now I'm a fan. His stuff is pretty good.

All of my icons under comments and posts are gone. All I see is the number of comments (for posts, the number of upbears, and the down arrow for more options.

A campaign in Oklahoma from 1934 to 1945 dynamited 3.8 million [American crows]. The effect on populations was negligible and damage to agricultural crops did not decrease, and thus the campaign was halted due to its ineffectiveness.

Can't sleep. Ate a bunch of tums and half a packet of questionable "pain au chocolate" (it is not). Currently sitting outside with my laptop because everyone else visiting for Christmas is a nergal worshipping plague gremlin. What's up fellow federal agents?

We're so back

@SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net

just like in general? or that dunning-krueger feeling when you finish a book and you're like "oh my god I could spend a lifetime studying a subset of a subset of this field and not know everything about it"?

I meant the 2nd thing but also the first lol. It's scary but I guess all you can do is try your best

Note to self: next time you watch the first couple episodes of a series that is good and compelling make sure to google the actor who plays the protagonist isn’t a sex pest whose character gets killed off right when their arc becomes compelling and the show falls apart, before you become engrossed

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

:geordi-no: killing off a character because it is learned the actor is a sex pest, inadvertently devoting a segment of your work to the deeds of said sex pest

:geordi-yes: hiring a different actor while making little-to-no acknowledgment of the change in the narrative, and also writing in a few flashbacks where you shoot with the new actor just to make sure.

Kind of obscure youtuber drama (technically these guys are probably bigger than any of the political youtubers but if you're not into mario/zelda/pokemon speed or challenge runs you may not know them) but apparently pointcrow and smallant made up after their beef. The whole thing was exactly what it seemed: friendly rivalry, some of their fans can't read irony (is it even irony? More kayfabe) and harassed pointcrow, he started taking it personally eventually.

Hello megathread patrons:

I'm currently at a library with a pretty extensive collection and cant think of any good books to check out. Can anyone help me out with recommendations?

I just finished To Kill A Nation by Parenti (very very good btw) and dont know what to get next. I find getting things from the library is good motivation to actually finish them

Anyone having trouble with the site on Firefox? For whatever reason it's taking my password, saying I logged in and then giving an incorrect_login error on my phone. I had to log in on Chrome, which I would really prefer not to do.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask.

Home after Christmas stuff. Family was less annoying than usual so that's cool and my folks hooked me up pretty good. Random star trek knick knacks from thrift stores and yard sales, a weighted blanket, Babylon 5 blu ray set and sixty beers.
