The confederates were so stupid. They should have just rebranded slavery to something like "migrant workers" and been done with it.

Or make slavery "illegal except as punishment for a crime" and then create a bunch of laws that specifically targeted former slaves. Given the politics of Andrew Johnson, all they really had to do was assassinate Lincoln...

This may be me being neurodivergent and dumb, but I'm not seeing the associative link between the breach-load grape-shot cartridge (short range, anti-infantry) and the states rights civil war myth.

Am I missing something?

It was about states rights. The Confederacy was against them. They wanted the federal government to overrule free states. They tried to annex free territories by force. They put in their constitution that no state could join unless is was a slave state. The civil war was, arguably, the south's attempt to eliminate state's rights.
