an efficient way to get grenades rolled into the command tent.

While fragging is funny and cool as hell, let's not pretend that military administrators lack methods for compelling compliance among conscripts on the battlefield. One of the primary purposes of basic training is to instill military discipline by breaking people down psychologically and building them back up as conditioned loyalists.

I would not bank on soldiers breaking ranks, particularly when they're moved up to the front lines and caught between the rock and the hard place.

Yeah but these guys aren't being conditioned, they're being given guns and sent straight into the meat grinder. I'd say they're better off shooting their CO and defecting to Russia (forever) but Ukraine also has snipers for just this occurrence.

And Russia has laid a lot of land mines, so its not a fun crossing

[–] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I would be looking for the first opportunity to run over to Russian lines and surrender

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's pretty hard to run through a kilometer of minefields and interlocked sectors of fire.

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Allegedly there is a Russian radio frequency that Ukrainians can broadcast on to receive instructions on how to cross lines and surrender. Idk if it's true or not though, plenty of lies on both sides of this war.

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

It does actually exist, but it is still a massive risk to cross no man's land.

[–] edge@hexbear.net 35 points 2 years ago (2 children)

They've been doing this from the very beginning of the war. Interesting to see NYT acknowledge it though.

[–] CrimsonSage@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah I remember reading about them detaining trans women for "draft evasion."

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Pretty sure that's just the fascists doing genocide but under "legal pretexts"

[–] CrimsonSage@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well yeah, but they were specifically sending them to the front because "All men need to do their duty."

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thats what I was saying yep. Expressly targeting them then sending them to the most dangerous places under the assumption they'll die because of Russian armaments

[–] CrimsonSage@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Oh gotcha, sorry, I thought I wasn't being clear.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

No worries no worries!

NYT has been coming clean on a lot of things related to Ukraine lately. Guess they're ready to drop Ukraine and move onto Israel ASAP

They got a memo from the CIA that it was time to pull the plug

Drafts are barbaric and should be abolished.

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Yeah, sealed is the objectively superior limited format.

I'll see myself out.

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

I think functionally the problem is the cause it is employed for. There's no version of the Ukrainian military fighting for control of Donbas that isn't barbaric.

[–] wahwahwah@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago

This feels like a preview of what'll happen in the US.

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago

same as it ever was

[British voice] You're not supposed to press gang people for the army, you're supposed to do it for the navy. Amateurs

[–] Saeculum@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

[Ukrainian voice] What navy?

The one that blows up natural gas pipelines
