Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Image is of Yemen seizing the first ship in its blockade of Israel (the Galaxy Leader) with a helicopter raid.

Alternate title: What If It Was The Bab El-Womandeb And It Was Just For The Ladies?

Ansarallah is a key component of the broader Resistance movement, backed by Iran, and has been a stalwart member in engineering the ongoing collapse of Zionism. It has steadily escalated both its rhetoric and, rarely nowadays, its actions, proving that the mythical "red line" might actually exist in the world after all, after going MIA in both Russia and China. It has been striking first Israel-owned ships heading through the Bab el-Mandeb - the strait that leads into the Red Sea and then to the Suez Canal - and, recently, has demonstrated its promise that any ships that intend to dock in Israel will be attacked. While this is really only half a blockade, the cost of going around Africa is significant, and Western insurance companies really don't like it when their ships get blasted by missiles and drones. Several shipping companies have already stated their intention to alter/stop shipping routes through the Red Sea, trying to prompt the West to find a "solution".

Despite US naval presence in the area, Yemen possesses the ability to strike the oil refining facilities of the Gulf monarchies, leaving the US in a very difficult position. If they attack Yemen, then not only do Western ships risk being attacked directly, but those oil refineries may go up in smoke depending on if they help the West - and global oil prices will skyrocket, in an already declining world economy - and it might cost several Western leaders their leadership positions, including Biden himself. A regional war could ultimately tumble into worldwide chaos.

Equally, however, the US cannot afford to lose Israel. It is the single most important American imperial outpost, perhaps alongside Taiwan. If Zionism is destroyed as a local destabilizing influence, then the Russia-China-Iran axis will find itself in a leadership position over the region. Israeli military losses in Gaza increase every single day as they advance further into the labyrinth death trap under the obligation to show some kind of military victory, with Hamas' strategy of attrition taking its toll. And Hezbollah sits there, having destroyed most of the border infrastructure, silently threatening the obliteration of Israel's infrastructure under the rain of a hundred thousand missiles.

As world attention gradually shifts away from the Gaza genocide, we continue to approach the brink.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

::: spoiler Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Ten Ways to Become a Stronger Comrade

As western communists in the 2020s, we find ourselves uniquely situated in time and space. For many, it is a time of high emotions and increasing revolutionary consciousness, but a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness has infected the hearts of many others. Have you felt that you have nothing material to contribute to the struggle? Instead of continuing to doom-scroll or fill your time with bourgeois distractions, here are ten concrete ways you can become a stronger comrade right now.

In order:

  1. Learn a new language, especially that of the largest minority group in your country (e.g. Spanish in the US).

  2. Learn first aid and CPR, as well as how to administer narcan.

  3. Meet your neighbours, whether knocking on their doors or leaving them a note to meet up at a third space, or leaving them a gift to construct goodwill.

  4. Join or start a reading group.

  5. Know where your closest community resources are.

  6. Brush up on protest safety, both physically and legally.

  7. Pay attention to local boycotts, lists of union-made goods, and BDS lists - don't cross picket lines.

  8. Volunteer in your community and join organizations.

  9. Learn history and theory.

  10. Actual self-care, like getting good sleep and touching grass, not whatever the hell neoliberals are calling self-care these days

Military dot com says

Military Focusing on JROTC Programs as Chances to Paint Picture of Service to Gen Z Dwindle

Tl:Dr the Military is desperate for recruits so they're planning on upping their numbers through making high school JROTC (Junior Officers' Reserve Training Corps) more enticing for the youth of America to join the military by offering economic temptations such as full-ride scholarships, free college credits to college ROTC, or automatic promotions upon enlistment.

There has also been a concern that JROTC is also introducing the more toxic aspects of the military in the form of physical abuse, sexual harassment, or worse, leading president Biden to order the Department of Defense to investigate itself and submit reports on any issues that occur to the white house.

Milei's supporters cancel their pro-Milei demonstrations.

"In response to our call for this Saturday, opposition groups are organizing very quickly to hold a counter-march. For this very reason we have decided to cancel it in order to promote social peace on festive dates."

Ancap Update: :ancaptain:

Crackdown on protests

Patricia Bullrich, Argentina's Security Minister, said that during the demonstrations tomorrow, December 20, there will be drones taking pictures of the protesters to identify those who "impede traffic".

This is important because yesterday, the Minister for Human Capital said that the government would cut off social benefits from identified demonstrators.

The Governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, has said that he will not apply the security protocol proposed by Bullrich

China :troll:

The government of China, led by Xi Jinping, will not renew the Swap with Argentina, governed by Javier Milei.

According to El Diario, the funds will remain frozen until the new Argentine government establishes formal relations with China.

China was supposed to pass on the sum of U$6.5 billion to Argentina, leading it to believe that the Argentine government used national resources in October and November to pay the IMF installments.

Milei recently asked Sérgio Massa to help him with the Chinese.

lol

The Swap was supposed to be used to pay off Argentina's loans with the IMF, but that wasn't the case in October or November, which leads us to believe that national reserves were used.

Bernie Sanders’s Incoherent, Pernicious Gaza Cease-Fire Position, Explained by one of the citations-needed boys

The reason Sanders opposes a longer cease-fire is that he explicitly supports the logic of Israel’s stated aim to overthrow Hamas. In doing so, he is advocating what is effectively a time-out so that Israel can present Congress with a more humane alternative to its current strategy of what President Joe Biden himself calls “indiscriminate bombing.” (It’s rare that a sitting president casually admits he’s a party to a war crime, but we live in strange times).

I have a suspicion that I can't shake that Biden's popularity decline among 35 unders is actaully the result of student debt payments starting back up in October and not the result of the Palestinian genocide, which just happens to be concurrent

I mean the idea a majority of Americans oppose any genocide was already stretching my suspension of disbelief

Your Thursday Briefing

Poland's new PM, Donald Tusk, has taken the public broadcaster off the air, and the heads of the TVP state broadcaster and Polish Radio were replaced to "depoliticize" them and have them provide "reliable information". The fascist PiS party has said that this indicates Poland is heading towards dictatorship, while the PiS-controlled media regulator has said this is “an act of lawlessness and recalls the worst times of martial law,” a reference to 1981. Polish nationalists have been trying to occupy state TV offices to protest.

South Korean carmaker Hyundai has announced that it is selling its factory in Russia for $77. Not $77 million or thousand, just 77 bucks. This means they will have a loss of $220 million. It wants to transfer its St. Petersburg assets by the end of the month. Non-western brands will likely fill the void; Russia is already China's largest car export market.

Ethiopia and Egypt have once again failed to reach an agreement over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which will ultimately produce 6000 MW, enough to turn Ethiopia into a net exporter of electricity. Egypt obviously does not want the downstream water to be curtailed, while Ethiopia wants to generate electricity, but despite repeated attempts to find a compromise between them, none have been reached so far. Ethiopia is not pausing its operations despite a lack of agreement, continuing to fill up the reservoir and get the dam fully online.

In the midst of an economic crisis caused by gestures vaguely, Ghana, the world's second largest cocoa producer, is having production increasingly disrupted by illegal mining and smuggling. To survive, farmers are having to sell their land to illegal miners, which is more profitable than growing cocoa. Ghana has gone from ~1 million tonnes of cocoa in 2020 to 750,000 tonnes for 2022-2023, and ~700 tonnes for 2023-2024. Ghana's government tries to increase the profitability of cocoa production by first buying the cocoa and then selling it on to private corporations and thus can boost prices for producers (and agreed to a 63% increase this year) but this is insufficient.

A town in Michigan has successfully fought the insidious communist influence of China by protesting against an American subsidiary of a Chinese company that wanted to build an electric vehicle battery cell factory in their town which would have provided 2500 jobs. Xi Jinping is reportedly day-drinking after failing his mission to destroy American democracy by establishing a surveillance network in Michigan via tracking microchips maliciously inserted in the batteries. Long live the gasoline car!

Russian Defense Minister Shoigu has estimated that Ukraine has lost over 383,000 troops, killed and wounded, since the beginning of the war, as well as 14,000 tanks, IFVs and APCs, 553 warplanes, 259 helicopters, 8500 artillery pieces, and MLRSes.

It is clear that milei's government will be absolutely insane and terrible, and to make it even worse he wont even leave good meme material behind, like Trump. You see, Trump was terrible, but at the very least you can laugh at the guy and his photo with the burgers, or throwing toilet paper, or saying things like "She just died? Wow. I didn’t know that. You are telling me now for the first time." and so many other glorious moments. But this mf is as stale as a rock, he has little charisma and never said anything funny in his entire fucking pathetic life. The good memes he'll leave behind are not related to him but his policies, like me being able to pay taxes in cum because that's a legal currency now or something.

milei: "Elon Musk called me and told me he's very interested in our lithium, the US Government is also very interested"

Fuck me, we're going to give all our resources away with this fucking baboon, it's going to be much worse than before. Also the massive 300 measures package (through decree, like some they're some royal motherfuckers) that he announced contains measures that are going to deregulate internet and communication services to allow, and I shit you not, "the entry of companies like StarLink". He announced on national television that he's going to do a little corruption by bringing in his loser friend the aparheid loving child molester fuck of elon musk.

May both find death at the hands of the people they exploit.

Still, this 300 masures decree is not yet in full effect, first it has to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, just one chamber's approval is required. And I think even the Supreme Court has to weigh into this issue, and I'm not sure they're fully convinced of it. He already called for extraordinary sessions already, there will be lots of lobbying (corruption, as we call it in the bad countries) so it's all up in the air.

We will destroy them. We have to, for the sake of our future generations and for the people suffering right now.

Quick update on my post about the cops who crashed into a gay bar in St Louis. Apparently, the rookie cops who crashed were apologetic, but the backup cops who arrived afterwards were the ones who attacked and arrested the bar co-owner. And they had beaten up and handcuffed him within 20 seconds of arriving. The guy who beat the bar owner has 14 years of experience in STLPD.

Btw the above doesn't excuse those rookies speeding, running red lights for no reason, driving distracted, or (potentially but we'll never know because there was no toxicology) driving under the influence.

crab-party crab-party Japan set to export Patriots to the US as stopgap crab-party crab-party

spoilerJapan is expected this week to formalize a change in policy that will enable it to export several dozen Patriot missiles to the United States, a move that would backfill Washington’s stockpiles. That would give Washington flexibility to send more of the sophisticated air defenses to Ukraine, which is in desperate need as Kyiv gears up for punishing Russian airstrikes this winter.

The change — a modification in defense export rules — will not explicitly mention the Patriot system but will meet a key request by the Biden administration, said U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing talks. Japan manufactures missiles for the Patriot, the U.S. military’s premier air defense system, under license from Raytheon.
