A real shame since the Thief formula would make an amazing game when done properly with modern technology. Thief 1 and 2 are games in which one of your most feared enemies are... tiled floors
Most other stealth games are just ninja power fantasies where you can kill or knock out everyone with your Batman utility belt's worth of weapons and gadgets (or in some cases, magical powers) while seeing their outlines through walls

Oblivion was a better thief game. I really loved, for example, the Grey Fox storyline.
