Reminds me of this Trump quote:

"When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength ... That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak...as being spit on by the rest of the world."

So maybe authoritarian right could also read: "They showed the power of strength."

Authoritarian left could be a Mao quote: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

Authelft: "Didn't happen, and if it did we did nothing wrong."

Authright: "Did happen, and they did nothing wrong."

I was about 8 years old then and I was probably more interested in Nintendo at the time. No idea what was going on outside that bubble.

I was old enough to be aware of the outside world (21), but didn't know much about China. The pictures and video of the tianenmen square massacre were a shocking revelation to how cruel the world could be.

  1. They didn't censor the nightly news back then like they do now. Parents told you to not watch or get out of the room.
