Our Rules:

  1. Keep it civil. We're all people here. Be respectful to one another.

  2. No sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia or any other flavor of bigotry. I should not need to explain this one.

  3. Must be tumblr related. This one is kind of a given.

  4. Try not to repost anything posted within the past month. Beyond that, go for it. Not everyone is on every site all the time.

  5. No unnecessary negativity. Just because you don't like a thing doesn't mean that you need to spend the entire comment section complaining about said thing. Just downvote and move on.

This is how things should be named. The Germans and the ......Latins.......had the right idea.

Ah yes. The Latins. From… Latland.

A ton of scientific naming is just describing things in Latin

My favorite one is a Drosophila gene called couch potato:

Overall Drosophila scientists are quite creative with names

Altough they are kinda counterintuitive as the names typically describe the phenotype when the gene knocked out

Yep, still getting confused everytime I have to deal with eye color (white+ is red and white- is white... I think?)

Also there's sonic hedgehog protien

[–] umbraroze@kbin.social 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yep and a lot of people get it wrong. It's not the "Sonic the Hedgehog protein" but "Sonic hedgehog protein", as in hedgehog protein that is Sonic. It's clearly distinct in meaning, and therefore completely different. As the original discoverer of the gene put it, "original protein name, do not steal".
