On a recent post, there were a lot of comments, which said that they were missing the headphones on newer mobile devices.

How many actually use the headphone jack?

I ask, because I have one on my phone, since I really wanted one, but I rarely use it. Like Tops 1/Month.

If I had one, I would. I walked my kid to school recently and grabbed some wired ear buds for the walk back. I had to spend the walk back listening to boring nature and shit.

There is really no reason to not have one. It does not significantly increase the cost of the phone. The space saving excuse does not really hold water. If the Zenfone can fit one, then all the other gargantuan phones should be able to.

I use earphones to listen to music and take calls hads free quite often.

I recently got a new phone, a Fairphone 5, which doesn't have a headphone jack, and I'm already missing it.

Listening to music is fine, I just use a USB-C to jack adapter, but I've been told people can't hear me well when I'm doing the same to take a call.

The other day I was in the car with my brother for hours and wanted to put on some music. I couldn't connect to the car radio via Bluetooth because my brother already was and needed it to take calls and whatnot, so AUX cable here we go. Except apparently my phone does something weird like shutting down the USB port when not in use (reasonable) between songs, creating a noise like when you connect a jack to a powered on speaker, which was super annoying.

So, yes, I use the headphones jack and sorely miss it.

Not at all. Bluetooth earbuds are too convenient for me. I could just leave my phone anywhere in the house playing podcasts while playing with my baby.

[–] Robboman93@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I use it everyday, I still like wired earphones a lot.

[–] Darcranium@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I use mine 2x per week and despise Bluetooth for many of the reasons described in this thread by others

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I use it every day, to store valuable pocket lint and bits of dirt.

[–] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Bluetooth earbuds are everything younger me dreamed of when dealing with when taking a tangled wire mess out of my pocket.

[–] Xander_Meters@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 years ago

Every day as my headphones have a wire aswell as bluetooth. The latency is definitely there while the wire sounds fuller too. Im sure there difference would be mitigated with a more expensive pair of headphones but I also need to be battery concious with my 5 year old phone and bluetooth drains faster.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I would use it, if my phone had one.

Absolutely use it at least weekly. My partner has Bluetooth wireless earbuds and they are always a problem - dropping connection, short and inconsistent battery life, dying at inopportune times, etc. They don't seem to even notice these issues because they've used wireless for so long, but it always drove me nuts everytime I tried switching.

Often enough to want it. I use it all the time in waiting rooms.

As replied under another comment :

I'll be honest... I bought a Poco F4 because the value for money it offered was amazing. Plus, I could unlock the bootloader and shift to a custom ROM whenever I wanted (literally as soon as I could lol. Hate MiUI).

This phone doesn't have a headphone jack, but I was willing to make the jump since my general use of headphones is not as much as earphones. My ears get sweaty or scratchy after more than an hour straight of earphones, and around the same for headphones.

As a result, my overall usage is limited. So, when I got my TWS (paid ₹2000 for an okay pair, no dual device pairing, okayish build quality for the case and an okayish connection. Sound was good tho.)

My situation meant I didn't really use them as much, although they go for almost 4hrs straight. And if I put them in the case, they go for weeks without needing a charge (case has a built-in battery of 1200mAh). So, whenever I think I need the case to charge I just set it up overnight. The only sad part is it doesn't have dual device pairing. I use my laptop and phone together and I'd kill for this feature, but my budget is thin atm.

I know it's not everybody's case, but this is my case. And while I miss the jack, I don't notice the lack of it. Audio quality is good enough for me. The wires were honestly the worst part of my wired experience anyway.

It's easy for me to unplug my headphones from my mic and plug it into my phone when switching devices for discord or listening to music. I also like wired headphones since they are harder to lose at least in my opinion.

everyday at work. I have Bose bluetooth earbuds, but there is sometimes a slight pause once in a while. Technology isn't perfect. But I like my hardwired classic earbuds.

I'm djing and I care about good audio, but the comfort of wireless headphones is just too big of an advantage for me when I'm not specifically planning the next set. The limiting factor regarding freedom of movement with wired headphones always bummed me out. I was never regretting the switch.

At home and for gaming I use the arctis 7 (wifi headset) and a wireless mouse, never had latency issues with fps shooters or anything. And I love the comfort of being able to just walk to kitchen or the bathroom without loosing audio, e.g. when I chat with my friends. On my phone I could use an aux adapter and I thought about buying it, but didn't ever really feel the need to do so. On my laptop however I wouldn't wanna miss aux, cause I don't always have an external soundcard with me :)

I use it daily, to connect my phone to my car AUX input and my various (very expensive) headphones.

[–] Xeroxchasechase@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

All the time

[–] Diabolo96@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 years ago

I bought 2 different Bluetooth earphones that I ended up rarely ever using and instead use my standard quality cable headphones.

[–] LotrOrc@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

It's the only way I listen to music when I'm not in my car or in my house

I had to buy a converter to stick my headphones into to connect to my phone because it didn't have the jack. Which is really annoying because I have really nice headphones and I don't want to sacrifice my sound quality for shitty Bluetooth ones.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I use it to collect sand and little stones in my device.
But also to have a backup if my bluetooth in-ears get low on battery or i need to plug the phone to my old school amplifier.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

At least once a week. Will be a shame when I eventually move onto a phone without a jack.

[–] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 2 points 2 years ago

I've used a headphone jack on my phone probably three times in the past two years. It is extremely uncommon for me to use it, and I would actually just prefer it not be there.

[–] Kazumara@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago

When I get a call at home while already wearing my wired headset I like to just plug it into the phone.

Since my current phone was bought used I had to compromise on some things, so I don't have a headphone jack anymore. I use a USB-C Adapter now. I use it for most phone calls, especially the longer ones with family. So probably for a few hours per month.

For quite a long time, until about 2021, I was still using wired headphones when on the go, but nowadays I'm addicted to noise cancelling, so that use case has moved to Bluetooth now. My protective headsets from work (both the over-ear and the in-ear set) also use Bluetooth.

[–] dynamo@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago

Every day, for msny hours

[–] FrostKing@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I use Bluetooth headphones every day, for most of the day. Despite that, there are times where i forget to charge them the night before, or something else goes wrong, and I use wired headphones.

If I got a phone without a headphone jack, I don't think it'd be much of a problem, until it is. I'd need it, and suddenly realized I don't have it.

[–] MdRuckus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (7 children)

I haven’t used wired headphones in about 8 years. Bluetooth all the way.

Used to back when I was in high school and it was more common, but bluetooth earbuds have gotten really good sound-wise that the hassle of wires/dac/adapter isn't worth it nowadays for me and basically everyone I know.

Wired headphones sound better usually but I think anyone claiming they're superior to bluetooth in every way is being disingenuous and hasn't tried modern buds.

[–] debeluhar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I never use it. But I only listen to songs when I'm driving.

[–] ExLisper@linux.community 2 points 2 years ago

I use it less and less. I was still using wired headphones quite often when I got my current phone couple years ago but since then I switched to BT in like 95% of cases. The remaining 5% is mostly travelling. Noise cancelling headphones are too big to carry and small BT headphones don't have enough battery for a long trip. In a couple of years when I'll be changing my phone it will still be be really nice to have mini jack in it but if there's no reasonable option I might do without.

[–] ndupont@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I've been using my wire headphones for over 10 years until recently. I've moved to Shockz, it's more convenient but the sound lacks bass.

[–] Wooki@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Yup use it with multiple devices, car and headphones. Bring it bloody back. No intention of buying another overpriced accessory plain and simple
