I will never understand people like this. Some video games you don't even play as a human, if I can empathise with a pink blob like Kirby then cis dudes can handle putting themselves in the shoes of a female character. Like holy shit, when has the protag of GTA ever mattered?

I remember seeing a mod to make CJ white and the Grove Street Families a neonazi gang featured prominently on some modding site (I think it was what later became/is now Nexus) in 2010 or thereabouts, so I'm gonna say the answer is that there have always been weirdo reactionary nerds and a broader reactionary undercurrent to American counter culture in general, which just came to a head and crystalized into the modern reactionary nerd movement with Gamergate.

Maybe Take Two's ridiculous crusade against mods will do something good for once.
Her being non-anglo on top of being a woman is almost certainly making reactionaries mald even harder. I hope there's a line in the game where she gives her pronouns because the sheer amount of dunk-worthy 
takes it would generate would be a sight to behold.
