Keynes and Stalin were also Templars

Yeah, and fucking Machiavelli was somehow one of the main Assassins. The lore honestly makes no sense.

They even imply that "The Prince" was actually about Ezio instead of Cesare Borgia (who's the comical bad guy in Brotherhood).

It does seem like being a Templar doesn't make you pure evil though, like Keynes and Stalin were likely of the group that wanted to use the alien tech to bring about world peace. That's apparently a big internal power struggle in the game. Between the Templars that want to use the power to end war and advance humanity (Copernicus I think is shown to be explicitly this) and the ones that use it exclusively for personal gain (Borgias).

The Assassins aren't necessarily the good guys, they're only really good when they're fighting Templars that are using the pieces of Eden for world domination purposes.

Lenin was affiliated with the Assassins, so really I think it's just real "If evil dictator Stalin hadn't forcibly taken over from Lenin then the USSR might have been a much better country and less of the International Community would have hated them for being a totalitarian fascist communist state" energy, which is obviously nonsense, Lenin was despised in his day by the international bourgeoisie and I can't imagine he would have taken a substantially different economic course than Stalin in response to rising fascism in Germany

I enjoy the games and the lore is fairly intriguing, I admit that I'm a sucker for alternative history that treats it in broad, imaginative sweeps (as opposed to more specific events like "What if Pearl Harbour never happened" or "What if Napoleon was never born") but how big, even somewhat controversial characters are depicted inside the games is pretty much consistently bad because, well, it's liberals writing their characters for the most part. Marx is a famous example of how their rough edges get sandpapered off. My knowledge of the early American figures like Ben Franklin and Washington is pretty spotty because I just don't give a shit about early American history but I have to imagine that they don't constantly talk about their flaws in Assassin's Creed 3. Or if they do it's in a very safe way so that liberals can just go "Well, there's nuance here..." and not have to disown them or anything

Assassin's creed is like the Marvel of video game, Lazy gameplay, formulaic, the world building is basically putting random historical characters as Easter eggs

Ass Ass ins Creed

I could never spell the name of the game without sounding it out. It was also one of the first xbox360 games I played besides Skyrim.

Templars vs ass ass ins was peak fiction to my 11 year old self.

The Templar to real world connections seem so contrived and random to me. At least it seems that I'm universe the connection is pretty tenuous too. Like Copernicus is a Templar, but decides to not be a Templar because he likes to study the stars.

I guess their reasoning is Assassins are the ones who are champions of the masses, and Templars are the ones who control the masses? But even then they have some odd choices for who's which.

Then again, it does seem that in universe you have Templars that champion freedom and peace and Assassins who just like killing. So I think it's a bit less straightforward than "good vs. evil". Especially after the reveal in 2 that basically everything they're fighting over is just the left over tech from an ancient alien race that wanted humans to be at peace, and the Templars wanted to use the tech to achieve that while the Assassins wanted humanity to get there on their own.

(Please forgive me I've actually been replaying the Ezio collection for the first time in 10 years this month)
