People like Jordan Peterson and his fans will refuse make clear statements because they rely upon vague allusions (and dogwhistles, of course) so they can play at motte-and-bailey tactics; if you respond to their poor attempt at making a point they'll object because it wasn't "what they meant" but the moment you ask them to be more explicit about their statements they'll treat you like you are being a troll and that you're sealioning them.

Yesterday, I saw that with the "all governments do atrocities, actually" debate douche who refused to clarify, up or down, what that statement is supposed to imply except liberal nodding toward its vague wisdom.
Feigning to not understand, or distorting a point is something that Hexbear users love to do.

It's the only time when rephrasing what someone said isn't a critical listening skill and incredibly persuasive. If you're already digging your feet into the dirt, doubling down on your own morality, every discussion feels like an attack.

Any of these could shine a light into often unobserved assumptions. But if you entrench yourself you lose out on the chance to learn. On the one hand I no longer see any value in engaging with people like this and think we should defederate outright. On the other hand I see posts like this and realize we are this close to mentally breaking them and the completionist in me wants to see it through.

Civilized adults in the room who make the hard decisions and get shit done don't insult people they disagree with. They just imply that those people are unwell in a way that may be construed as mental illness then mock them for that perceived weakness.
