While people love 2016 Matt Ryan. I still say if Brady wasn’t suspended 4 games and got to play his usual dominant games against the bills, and cardinals. He probably wins mvp. He was second in mvp voting with 4 games missed.

Shame we don’t get to witness the Darnold rewrite with this offense

[–] Outrageous-Machine-5@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I hear the Jets need a QB

Notes on the data cherrypicking. QBs used are 2023 Purdy (Shanahan), 2021 Garoppolo (his last full season with the 49ers, again Shanahan), Nick Mullens (he started 16 games over two seasons for Shanahan, I created a Frankenseason out of those for this), Matt Ryan 2016 (his last season with Shanahan), 2023 Stroud (with Shanahan’s 2022 Offensive Passing Game Coordinator as OC), 2023 Tua (with Shanahan’s 2021 Offensive Coordinator as HC).

Would have preferred to put this in the original post, but that violates sub rules.

Kyle does for quarterbacks what Mike used to do for running backs. He makes great into elite, good into great, average into good, and bad into just below average. And that is because the "system" is the little heard of strategy to surround the QB with talent vs hoping the qb can make anyone work.

[–] Meltedcoldice0212@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

so does this mean QB's will eventually be devalued and/or tossed to the curb like how Mike pretty much started the trend with RB's that we see on full display today?

[–] bauboish@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Mike Shanahan's offense was plenty favorable to QBs. If there were social media back then people would be talking all about how Shanahan made Brian Griese viable and Jake Plummer into a Pro Bowl QB. He was just terrible at scouting QBs... a trait that his son actually kinda share if you think about it.

[–] BookEuronGreyjoy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fun fact it was actually Brian Griese who scouted Brock Purdy and backed him him to Kyle

Yeah this is so incredibly reductive and flat out wrong. Wrong because Shanahan didn’t always have the stacked offensive skill he has right now and he still made it work. Just look Garoppolo’s first 6 starts with the Niners (all wins) after he was traded from NE.

Shanahan is a great offensive coordinator and playcaller independent of his skill position talent. Acting like the strategy is “just get good players” is beyond stupid when he’s probably one of the best in the NFL in getting guys open.

It is also reductive to act as if your opinion is superior and objective and that everyone who disagrees simply doesn't pay attention or doesn't have your viewership credentials.

Also there may be a case that CJ Bethard and Bryan Hoyer are not in fact better than Jimmy Garopolo (neither was franken-season Nick Mullens). But i was not arguing jimmy g or Purdy bad. I said he elevates his qbs. Also digging into the 5 game win streak it is not like all the wins were against great teams
5-11 Bears rookie Mitch Trubisky
4-12 Texans w/ TJ Yates
9-7 Titans (good win)
10-6 Jaguars (good win)
11-5 Rams resting their starters

They also started the next season 1-2 (the Chiefs game counts even with the injury as it was 4th and 7 the next snap, they got backed up on a penalty and kicked a field goal to never touch the ball again)

But yes, because he didn't completely shake the Chip Kelly Roster up in year 1 to win with below average qb play, them finally having enough pieces by 2019 to be competitive doesn't factor in because we have never seen teams with bad records go on a run in December before.

It's dope how you conveniently left out they were 1-10 before that. It's also odd (and just flat out wrong) that you said Jimmy's first 6 starts and not 5. Because he only started 5 games when they first got him in 2017 and went 5-0. His 6th start was the opener of the 2018 season which they lost. So he started 5-1 in his first 6 starts.

I swear, it really feels like some of you guys just started watching football this year but also like being really opinionated.

The Six Shanahan Systemiest Sell Sea Shells down by the Sea Shore

[–] Skywalkerkid9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wow kinda feels like any QB would have good Y/A in that system and maybe having good Y/A isn’t the measure of the best QB

[–] ghostofwalsh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Is this just a link to a sorted list of passing yards leaders for 2023?

What Mike Shanahan was to running backs is what Kyle Shanahan is to quarterbacks.

[–] aintnoonegooglinthat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Systemesque?

[–] The_American_Viking@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Mike Shanahan not already being in the HOF is a disgrace.

[–] EthanSpears@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Dak and his ability to process would be legitimately incredible in a Shanahan scheme

[–] 2ChainzTalib@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's almost like the Shanahan system produces good players at all levels. WEIRD.

Gee, maybe that guy should get consideration for like, some sort of accolade that they give to people that have had a profound effect on the game.
