How incredibly stupid: What the fuck India?

Nahendra Modi is a Hindu nationalist, who rose to power amidst questions on his role in what was arguably a pogrom in Gujarat, which likely cost the lives of over a thousand Muslims.

The whole country is sliding towards authoritarianism and Muslims are increasingly marginalized and discriminated against. Lynchings have surged. Kashmir is majority Muslim. These students were almost certainly Muslim too.

Yeah, this bullshit is happening all over the globe lately. It's like people forgot all about World War 2 and the horrors of fascism.

It's all cyclical, nationalism and ethocentricity rise get pushed back routinely which leads to leftwards general overcorrection every time. I hate to say it but it's a good thing, shitty that that's the way we deal with things but we almost always end up better for it afterwards.

We do, right up until we don't again and the whole stupid cycle repeats.

I dunno I think in general through history we've moved farther left than right it's just the swings right paint a bolder picture.

Yeah, if you look at some of the rethoric coming from Hindu nationalists, it's very similar to the stuff white supremacists say. It's just pure racism.

That's a rather dystopian article

I too, celebrated India's loss. I even made a post on Lemmy about it.

Technically I celebrated Australia's win, but it amounts to the same thing.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

SRINAGAR, India, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Indian police arrested seven students in the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) region under anti-terror laws for allegedly celebrating Australia's victory over India in the men's Cricket World Cup final earlier this month, police said on Tuesday.

Claimed in full but ruled in part by India and Pakistan, Muslim-majority Kashmir has seen a bloody insurrection against New Delhi for decades, with militants fighting security forces since the 1990s.

Police said the seven students were charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) after they found video evidence of them raising anti-India chants.

UAPA deals with inciting or advising any unlawful activity and is punishable with seven years' imprisonment.

Muslims in J&K have in the past cheered for the competing side in India cricket matches as a way of protesting Indian rule.

"It is shocking that cheering for a winning team too has been criminalised in Kashmir," said the region's former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
