By my count, of the 37 QBs taken in Round 1 since 2011, only 8 have been what you can call a success for the team that drafted them, and only 1 sort of lead their team to a Super Bowl win (Wentz, but we all know that Nick Foles did that). That's a 21.6% rate of success. This is why looking for "generational talent" in the first round is a fool's errand. And when applied to this franchise that has shown very little ability to identify and develop QB talent in the draft, it's absolutely moronic.

Anyway, here's my list and Hit/Miss count. Note that there are more "hits" in recent classes b/c we don't know how they'll turn out (Burrow who I love, has 2 season ending injuries, Kyler Murray, one, etc.). I think it's too soon to say anything about 2022 class.

What many fail to understand. 80% of all drafted players are considered busts or misses. With the average career in the NFL is 4 years, most never get a 2nd contract. That is more of an indicator than anything else.

[–] JeanieGold139@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So what's your alternative? Just give up and turn the Bears into a soccer franchise? The fact first round picks have a chance at busting doesn't mean you should whine and just give up, besides that picking in the first round is the best method at getting a franchise qb by far. Good qbs don't hit free agency and later round qbs have an even higher rate of busting.

[–] homestyle28@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If I were a GM, I would always trade out of No. 1.

If I were Bears GM, I'd take MHJ, trade the other pick, and take 3 OLs in the first 2 rounds if I can.

[–] ratfam1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is the same dude that is asking for one more year of flus getsy and fields.

[–] rudeboybill@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

"Woah guys, a lot of draft picks don't pan out, maybe the Bears should just avoid drafting in general??"

[–] Puzzleheaded-Ear9487@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Or, the opposite point, take as many shots as you can at draft picks. It's a numbers game.

[–] sobes20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

And when applied to this franchise that has shown very little ability to identify and develop QB talent in the draft, it's absolutely moronic.

This is absolutely my favorite criticism about the Bears and argument against them drafting a QB because if you believe this to be true, why be a fan of this team? Setting aside the fact that it is fatalist nonsense, if you're resigned to the fate that the Bears will never be able to draft and develop a QB, just cut your losses and find a new team to follow.

[–] generation_D@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

See this post (one of the best ever on this sub) for why this is ridiculous

[–] badseedjr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That post is far from one of the best ever. He gets the types of fans right, but the complete ignorance of our QB failures in citing only Trubisky and Fields as QBs that failed here is pretty unforgivable.

[–] BIG_FICK_ENERGY@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m not sure what your prescription is. You list Fields as a miss, and I agree with that. So even if your 22% success rate for 1st round QBs is accurate and representative (which I’d argue it isn’t because we’d likely be drafting a #1 or #2 overall QB, not just a first rounder), wouldn’t you prefer a 22% chance of finding the guy over a 100% chance of sticking with someone who isn’t?

[–] BurgerBob1010@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

including Dwayne Haskins as a miss is such a weird thing to do. He played 16 total games - not even a full NFL season. Using him as a reason to not draft a 1st round QB is just so weird to me.

but anyway, terrible post in general

[–] Puzzleheaded-Ear9487@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just scrolled through the responses here. Unbelievable how sensitive everyone is to this post. I don't even know what there is to argue here. The OP doesn't even say what you should or shouldn't do but just because it doesn't support the narrative of draft their QB they want they're flipping out.

[–] GoGoGoRL@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bro said hit (probably) about burrow

[–] ChillyRyUpNorth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The numbers look a lot different if you look at the top qb taken in the first few spots

The number of people who thought Mac Jones or Pickett being stars are few and far between

[–] Bears9Titles@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Delete this

[–] No-Author-508@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Herbert a miss lmfao, what a clown post.

Average Fields truther. Doesn’t know what a QB actually looks like.

[–] FaithlessnessFine72@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If fields is a miss, why keep him??

[–] forgotmyoldname90210@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If you keep someone bad long enough eventually they have to be good right? Right? Or if you just pretend the person that is bad at what they are supposed to do is good then they are good. I mean it works for Willy Coyotee if he does not look down than gravity isn't real.

[–] josevictor21@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Let's never draft another QB then, let's trade everything we have to a renowned QB like we did with Jay Cutler

[–] TerrrorTown75th@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Jay Cutler is the greatest Bears QB of all time. Yes please Ill take one.

[–] tfw13579@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Watson can't really even be called a miss either. Dude was fantastic before his off the field issues and even netted the Texans a bunch of picks.

[–] Brodie1567@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Lmao, I stopped reading after Herbert was labeled a miss.

[–] Lobanium@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Keep Justin, fire coaching staff, hire competent coaches. The problem with that is that I have no confidence that the Bears can hire competent coaches.

[–] GoldenDude@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This Sub is so dumb it makes my head hurt

[–] AndyThatSaysNi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Tannehill was starting QB quality for many years and led the Titans through many playoff runs. He's just aging out of the league now, but was a hit.

Goff as a miss is laughable both for his time in the Rams and currently with the Lions.

Watson is interesting. If the off-the-field stuff doesn't happen, I assume we're still calling him a hit. Maybe another TBD like Murray?

Herbert has done more than enough to earn a hit rating, though I can understand the skepticism when looking at the Chargers overall being a perennial bubble team.

That's already up to 32.4% with those 4 names being appropriately rated, let alone odds increasing the higher a pick is made. Pretty decent considering our current QB you have rated as "Miss (Probably)". Seems like an upgrade in odds at least of decent QB play.

[–] bowski44@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The dolphins drafted him…

[–] AndyThatSaysNi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] AsunderEric6@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is the dumbest thing I'll see all week and it's only Monday.

[–] TheFatOrangeYak@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Bro huh? Do you just want us to NEVER pick a QB?

“50 percent of marriages in the US end in divorce, nobody should get married ever.”

That’s what you sound like

[–] forgotmyoldname90210@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In fairness to him, he shares this opinion with a lot of people here. A lot. He also was willing to make this bad point in the dumbest way possible.

[–] dtemp2022@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is extremely cherry picked and just looms on what it looks like today.

Jordan Love is a first year starter and I hate to say it but he’s playing better. Can’t call him a mess yet

I had to reread you calling Herbert a miss 10 times to make sure I read it correctly

Watson would’ve been a hit for the Texans if he never got into legal trouble, that wasn’t a skill issue that was off the field stuff

Jared Goff wasn’t a miss for the Rams, he was on a team that made the SB. Yeah they traded him but to say he was a bust pick is dumb and he’s playing today

RGIII isn’t a miss if he doesn’t get hurt and the coaches don’t force him to play

[–] Paran0idMan33@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This list makes me want to use the Panthers’ pick on a quarterback even more.

[–] Standard_Employee751@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I disagree with Fields being probably a Bust. Considering offenses are having a down year, he’s dealt with so many inconsistencies, and we’re a long way from competing he’s played fine. Not elite but good enough.

I don’t see why we need to move on from him. The reason everyone was saying we needed to take Caleb was because he could win games by himself. But he can’t even do that in the college level. There’s no QB in this class I feel this team needs especially where we are picking in the first. Caleb isn’t special, he’s not generational, he’s not gonna transform any franchise.

[–] AnteaterSuper9984@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

LOL!

can you now tell us the % rounds 2-7?

[–] SellFragrant2836@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Jared Goff absolutely not a miss

[–] Intelligent_Thanks15@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Dwayne Haskins as miss is cold...

[–] Aware_Style1181@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Goff might win a Super Bowl this year

[–] MDizzleGrizzle@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Goff? Watson?

[–] -HumphreyBoggart-@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Wow that 2020 QB draft class was incredible - 4 hits!

[–] high_af_on_science@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I also am hesitant to want the over hyped 1st round QBs. Absolute nightmare scenario is letting Fields go, to draft Caleb or Maye and they aren't good. I think it's safer to keep Fields and draft an OL or Edge or MHJ. I don't think either QB prospect will be as good as Stroud, don't reach and fall for the hype. Take a QB in the 3rd or 4th round as a project piece instead.

[–] TheKnightsEnd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I swear half of this sub does not watch a millisecond of football.

[–] forgotmyoldname90210@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They are stuck watching the story of the 85 bears on repeat.

[–] SurferSting84@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So what should we do? Just fold the franchise and call it forever?

[–] Gryffindorq@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

hmmm. good post. i think id be a little more generous on what id call a hit, but it would not really change ur point

[–] HereJustBcuz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

And there is a 100% chance we wont get a franchise QB if we dont draft one.

Like wtf. How fucking stupid is this fucking sub

[–] Melodic-Geologist532@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

What is the criteria for hit vs miss? Cause this just seems, like, your opinion man.

[–] frank1934@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So that’s your reasoning to not pick a QB again? That’s kinda dumb

[–] PianoEmeritus@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Let’s check the % chance on a QB taken mid round or undrafted, shall we

[–] FujiHakarl@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Data proves first QB drafted has a higher hit rate than QBs drafted later. Trubisky is an exception rather than the rule.

[–] Honchoed@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’d put Goff and Tannehill down as hits. Maybe not reaching hyped expectations but both have been starters for a long time. Goff is still doing well.
