World leaders and authoritarian governments never learn .... there are two ways to get people to do what you want them to do

  • force them and coerce them through intimidation, violence, ostracizing, or punishment
  • convince them to do what you want through their own free will (whether it is legitimately positively reinforcing and helping people or just subverting and lying to them)

This was the difference between 'Brave New World' (which convinced people through drugs and entertainment to do what they were told) and '1984' (where people were violently forced to conform.
