I’ve been a iPhone user for ages and tried lots of different apps to replace the native iOS apps. As a casual user though I keep coming back to the native apps because they just work across all my devices. So I guess I’m curious what everyone uses instead from a casual point of view

I use very few native apps. Specifically, Mail and Photos and that's it. I use Chrome, Google Maps, Waze,Google Keep, Google Kalendar, Google Tasks, Google Home,Spotify...I change devices often, I use many different platforms, I can't imagine being locked in one single ecosystem with all my apps and services.

I use gmail, google maps and google chrome. I find them much better than what Apple offers.

I also use whatsapp because people in Europe dont give af about iMessage

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Haha that’s true. I mostly use WhatsApp

[–] choppedcheddar@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Accuweather, 2FAS for authentication, I tried switching from Mail, but iCloud has privacy features that far ahead of gmail so I dumped gmail but I have a Google Account. I use Parcel for package tracking and Calzy for calculator which eons ahead of what Apple calls a calculator.

spotify google ,google maps

I’ve been an Apple user since the 6s. And I don’t use any native app besides Messages.

Chrome, Gmail/Outlook, Google Maps, Google Calendar, Pocket Casts, Spotify.

  • Fantastical because the stock calendar app sucks.
  • Spark, because Apple's mail client often carries lines continuously to the right without starting a new line, making emails harder to read.
  • Evernote because it has note versioning and an easy option to export should I ever want to leave
  • Carrot Weather because I can choose a source, and the watch complication shows the condition AND the temperature. Also, far less scrolling and clicking around
  • Todoist because it's more robust than Reminders, though I still use Reminders for those small "hey Siri, remind me to check the mail in an hour" kind of things.

I'd flip this on it's head, as I don't by default use any of the native apps except for maybe calendar and contacts. Not for any particular reason.. I just like the platform that apple has for an OS, but I prefer to leverage that with 3rd party software.

iOS apps are by far more stable and better supported/written.

i use whatsapp because finnish people refuse to use imessage

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

To be honest I think in most countries people use WhatsApp over iMessage. Definitely the case here in the UK

[–] _nosfa@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

google maps, google calendar, whatsapp, onenote, spotify, pocketcasts, sometimes halide.

[–] TheCoolHusky@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Structured to replace Reminders and Calendar. It’s like a mix between the two and is mainly a time blocking app. I really can’t stand Apple Calendar, as it’s so minimalistic you can’t see anything at a glance. If I need to plan long term events I use TimeTree, which has great collaborative features and separates different types of event really well, much better than anyone else on the market imo.

Polymail, far superior to the mail.app

[–] Exotic_Demand_6232@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Google Maps, WhatsApp, Telegram, Microsoft Edge (the . I am in  ecosystem for more than ten years. I tested all kind of apps; now, on iPhone 15 Pro, I am using above apps and removed  Maps and Safari. In my opinion,  Maps is garbage in Europe, the same Translate. Google Translate and Microsoft Translator are infinitely better.

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’ve found Apple Maps good in the UK. I’ve not tried it in Europe since before Covid but can’t go wrong with Google maps

I replaced Reminders with the Due app. It's a one time purchase of just a few bucks. The app is excellent and so customizable

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Due is an amazing app. I quite like how aggressive it is in prompting you to complete tasks

Gmail: Both personal and work. I can't figure out on how to set a proper email signature (work email) on the Mail app. I'm referring to showing the correct images and links. Gmail syncs the signature seamlessly.

WhatsApp: My main source of communicating. We don't use iMessage here.

Google Calendar: To sync my work stuff

Google Maps and Waze: Seems to work better on where I live

Spotify: Both music and podcast

Chrome: I dislike the address bar being placed on the bottom of the screen in Safari

Evernote: Easier to sync with my Android phone

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can’t remember if they put in an option to move the address bar in safari or not but it seems to ringing bells. Gmail is very good on iPhone

[–] XOFunit@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oh. I seem to have found that option. I'd probably still use Chrome though. Most of my logins are saved there. Ha.

[–] HiperCool9@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use gmail because that’s what I was used to when I had an Android, Google Maps for the same reason, and Firefox because of connectivity with my Windows PC and privacy.

[–] fahadaslam2000@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

All Microsoft Apps for Web Browser, Emails, Document Scanning, Notes taking and Office, since I started from Windows Phone as my smartphone, all my default mental preferences have been set there. Moreover, Microsoft accounts syncs all data to my other phone, tab and laptop.

Here Maps and Google Maps instead of Apple Maps.

Paytm/PhonePe/Google Pay instead of Apple Pay as Apple Pay isn't available in India.

WhatsApp, as again iMessage and FaceTime isn't used by people who even own an iPhone in India. Most people haven't even turned it on on their phones here.

[–] Cherrymoon20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Google Maps and Gmail in place of Apple Maps and Mail.

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Most of the time the mail app is fine for me but gmail tends to be easier to use especially when I’ve got a big chain to go through

[–] Lance-Harper@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Been fine with Apple apps. I hate having duplicates, plus security, privacy are major concerns. Plus ecosystem.

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That’s mostly my logic too

[–] sceptrix1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Google Maps, Calculator, Mail

I just don't find the native calculator this convenient, so i use the first one i got on appstore search ☠️

I use Gmail, mostly because the Mail app doesn't give me instant notifications.

[–] CaterpillarFinal375@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah that’s a bug bear of mine too

Spark for email, because the stock email app doesn't seem to play nice with Gmail.

Google Maps for cycling directions because Apple doesn't offer cycling directions where I live, and sometimes for driving directions because occasionally places I want to go don't exist in Apple Maps.

Overcast for podcasts because I find it to be a better experience in pretty much every way.

A local weather app because Apple's Weather is basically a coin toss where I live.

[–] tabpp3349@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Haseba Calculator instead of the stock one

[–] LaBeefin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

GrindR. Cause I be horny AF.

[–] Nowisee314@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If Apple apps were all excellent top notch app then they wouldn't be making the money they make on all the apps that do things better than the simple apps they give us for free.
Apple knows they are limited and don't want to crush the money makers.
