Most people seem to be giving their ranks on MVP voting citing only QBs. It’s hard to imagine that just a title over 10 years ago Brees’ 46 TDs wasn’t enough to win MVP.

I’m curious as to who the real MVP candidates are. QB production is down so I’m really gearing towards awarding it to a defensive player like Myles Garrett. I know some people have also cited CMC and Hill.

The only non-QB who has a chance to win it this year is CMC.

[–] Shaynisin@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Myles Garrett or CMC.

If it has to go to a QB I think it's Stroud easily

[–] DropC2095@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Brees was also better than Peyton in every statistic in 09 and they still gave Peyton the MVP. It’s a media award given out by sports writers.

[–] gratefulfenny@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

My vote for non QB MVP has to be the Raiders Maxx Crosby. Without him we would have a much weaker record but more importantly he has held this team together.

[–] scarrylary@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If the browns win the north, Myles will be mvp

[–] sprout92@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Myles Garrett is on a FREAKSHOW pace right now - if he keeps it up, him.

Just as TJ should've won MVP 2 years ago. And JJ back in the day.

I agree it shouldn't be a QB. Let's take a look at two of the top QBs in terms of scoring. People are saying Hurts should win it but he has been carried quite a bit by his team. Allen actually has more total Td's this year (rushing and passing combined) than Hurts and the turnover percentage is similar. Only difference is Allen left the field 2x with leads that the defense choked away to Mac Jones and Wilson while Hurts defense did not choke. Bills should be 8-3 if the defense did their job against the Patriots and Broncos at the end while the Eagles could easily be worse if the Chiefs actually caught passes, which would have changed the whole MVP narrative. Both guys are similar but are not lighting it up.

So I think someone like Garrett should get it, as he has been huge in leading that Browns defense or Tyreek Hill

[–] isimplythinkoutloud@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not biased at all. Christian McCaffrey

[–] ShortedSolenoidCoil@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Deebo Samuel.

[–] CthulhuAlmighty@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If these non-QBs keep their stats up and their teams keep winning:

  1. CMC, 49ers
  2. Hill, Dolphins
  3. Myles Garrett, Browns
  4. ETN, Jaguars
[–] youngm2925@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

At least for defense: DaRon Bland…guys got 6 INTs, 4 returned for TDs, through 10 games. Unreal.

I hate to give credit to an Eagles player, but I think the MVP is Jason Kelce, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.

The Eagles are 6-1 in one-score games. Without the tush push, that definitely would not be the case. Without Kelce, the tush push wouldn’t be a thing.

Jason Kelce is carrying the Eagles from being a .500 team into 9-1 Super Bowl contenders.

I really think it should be Myles Garrett this year if the Browns make the playoffs.

All the QB turmoil, plus game-changing defensive plays he makes shows how valuable he is rather than reaching and giving the award to a Hurts or Purdy

[–] CunningAndRunning@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This narrative is only gaining traction because 1: people are tired of the MVP being auto relegated to quarterbacks and 2: the top quarterbacks this year are named Brock Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, and Dak Prescott.

At this rate, one of those 3 should win. A lot of people are just haters at can’t accept a new name ascending the throne.

I disagree with the headline.

The QB is THE most important position in sports for a reason. The Bengals are done because Burrow is hurt...he wasn't having a great season due to a slow start but that kind of thing highlights how critical the position is. The Ravens have crumbled without Lamar when he got hurt the last 2 seasons and missed some games.

My own team's SB chances last season were ultimately ended in PHI as soon as Purdy's elbow was destroyed.

The moment a team's starting QB gets hurt..their season is finished unless for some weird reason you get a really really good backup...and even that lowers expectations.

I also disagree with the "No QB deserves MVP this year" narrative..

Lamar, Stroud and Purdy have played at an objectively high level and one of them deserves the award depending on what you prefer:

1.Lamar- affects defenses in ways others QBs cannot...

  1. Stroud- has probably elevated his team the most

  2. Purdy- by far the best per throw stats of any QB this season on par with some previous MVP seasons.

MVP is supposed to be the player a team has no shot to win without...and that is always gonna be the QB

Myles Garrett. He’s an absolute freak, and I mean that in the best way possible.

[–] Tunatron_Prime@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I wish it’d be Hill but just because he hits 2k I don’t think its enough.

I point to Kupp’s 2021 year and he wasn’t even a real contender then with a Triple Crown Year + YAC leader.

QB it is!

[–] uglyuglydog@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I say we go Mark Moseley and give it to a kicker.

[–] quasiqualityqualms@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Recognizing QBs are having a down year, I legitimately believe the MVP could be CJ Stroud. The Texans were not supposed to be remotely competitive this year.

[–] cooldaniel6@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Fuck we took them for granted

[–] JockAussie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In a different timeline, Kirk and JJ aren't injured, the Vikings are 7-4, he is still dominating the league in tuddies and yards, and on course to be MVP.

And then we lose the wildcard game because of our kicker.

[–] Player7592@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Christian McCaffrey

  • #1 Rushing Yards
  • #2 Yards from Scrimmage
  • #1 TDs

Changed the identity of the 49er offense the moment he arrived, and has shown incredible durability and tenacity

[–] experienceTHEjizz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I would give it Lamar Jackson. He's the Raven's best play maker.

Who even is the front runner for MVP? Doesn’t feel like there’s one guy who’s been better than the rest this year

[–] Paradoxikles@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Gotta be Garrett then.

[–] REPTARJESUS@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Hill, CMC, or Garrett. I don’t see It happening, but It should.

[–] ImRightShutUp1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Myles Garrett

[–] jkman61494@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The issue is there’s so many injuries this year that I can’t really argue a non QB winner. MAYBE McCaffery?

[–] pbotdf@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] superlazerX@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Myles Garrett

[–] New-Newspaper-7543@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] ABoyIsNo1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why’d you bring up Brees? He lost it to another QB. Don’t see how that’s relevant to a post about wanting a non-QB to win

[–] bugluvr65@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

myles garrett has won at least 3 of their games on his own

[–] Worried-Opposite-588@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

So Offensive Player of the Year?

[–] Tsunami-Papi_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

tyreek hill

[–] moxxon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

MVP is a joke award. That being said, if it weren't a QB popularity contest, I'd go with Garrett if he continues to play like a demon.

[–] stephker3914@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's gotta be Tyreek Hill.

[–] CodyNorthrup@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I dont think the QB with the best stats win it. Right now, that would be Purdy or Stroud overall. They wont give it to Stroud because he is a rookie, and Purdy won’t get it because some fans and critics dont even think he is top 10.

CMC or Hill could win. Don’t think they will ever give it to a defensive player unless he breaks the sack record by a lot

[–] Irrationate@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

CMC should be the top contender. Although I’d throw my vote towards Stroud if I’m being honest. Hurts will win because the eagles are the nfls new darling but if you put someone like baker on that eagles team they’d be doing just as well. If you put baker on the Texans they would be a bottom 5 team and I really like baker.

[–] occupy_this7@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Maxx Crosby

[–] KingGerbz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s just the nature of the game. As much as we hate to admit it QB is by far the most valuable position in the game. They have the most influence on the outcome and overall success of the game.

[–] hellenkellerfraud911@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There is no scenario where a player other than a QB should ever win MVP in today’s NFL.

[–] Chewbubbles@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If it wasn't a QB award, Garrett has to be the clear front runner right now. Browns defense is basically winning them games in probably the hardest division in the NFL this year.

I would've kept CMC in the running had he broken the record and not lost production in their 3 game skid. He is still on pace, with Hill being only 50 yards behind for most production yards and has the most TDs scored.

That all said, Garrett is leading one of the best defenses we've seen. The fact they are in the hunt with an offense that hasn't done them any favors this year is beyond impressive. He has the most sacks right now as well, and with plenty of games to go, 20 sacks this season isn't unreasonable.

[–] lkn240@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If Purdy finishes strong he absolutely should win the MVP. He's destroying the league in almost every advanced stat.

[–] Dukeofdorchester@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Myles Garrett

[–] ResearcherEntire7203@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Why not? They are the most valuable position by an astronomical amount, literally they make LT the second most paid and valuable position because they protect the qb.

QB is THE most important position in the game. The league has neutered defenses so much that the differences between a great quarterback and a mediocre or bad one is a chasm. Great play at the position automatically makes a team a contender. The Texans would be in the playoffs if the season ended right now, and that's ONLY because of CJ Stroud. I don't care that he's a rookie. Right now, I would say he's clearly the most valuable player to any team in the league.
