I just checked their website, and while yes, they do have gorgeous cases, I was genuinely mindblown to see their average is between $75 and $120.

I have a high income so it's genuinely not about money, I just don't see how creating a case can be so expensive?

People pay $1k+ for a phone when there are cheaper options that largely function the same. Shouldn’t be surprising that it’s the same for cases.

I payed 40$ once for a Casetify case for my IPhone XR (although I think I had like a 10$ discount for being the first purchase or smth). I don’t know what the hell happened between that and now, they are sooo expensive.

If I like their design, I'd just buy copies from Aliexpress 😂

Though I spent my money on dbrand. I really like their grip case.

[–] Davarey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have rhinoshield. Real question is why some people have a 2€ case on a 1200€ phone

[–] DeeYumTofu@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

People don’t buy casetify cases because they are good cases, they buy them because they like the design. The designer markup is an industry I never thought would enter the case market but here we are.

[–] mohmd_shbbr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In my country we get knock offs for casetify with similar quality as the og at around 4usd.

[–] Kekebean@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Literally just go to AliExpress and spend $3, protects my iPhone for years.

[–] AttentionKmartJopper@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I really like some of their designs so I make the splurge. That said, I have not paid more than 62 dollars for one, which is steep, yes, but just saying that the simpler builds are in that range, e.g the ones without camera covers and overdesigned bumpers.

[–] PeachBoyX@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m using an ESR case with MagSafe and stand built-in around the camera hole. Roughly $25CAD after taxes on Amazon. So far, can’t complain. Looks great and hopefully it can take a drop in an accident.

[–] BilosingGuy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

went for Dbrand instead. Totally worth it

[–] abbakusx3@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You can feel the designs on the case when you run your fingers over it.. they didn’t put any coatings to protect it. They chip easily. And boarder comes apart from the back. I ordered a case and they sent me one all scratched and defective.. they did fix this but they literally sent me 2 more messed up cases before the 4th one was okayish.. their shipping is long so this took like 3 months before finally getting an acceptable case.. it shouldn’t take 3 cases before you get a scratch free one imo.. also I rotate cases a lot and drop my phone a lot. Casetify was the only case where my screen cracked..

Unfortunately

[–] pcweber111@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Marketing. That's all it is. Just upscale marketing of their product. Price it expensive and many will assume it's more valuable or somehow "better". I get bored with phone cases and cycle through too many to pay that, much for one. 60 bucks is the most I would spend and even then it better be a neat case.

[–] mellonsticker@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Otterbox is the most expensive case I’ve ever bought…

But considering their reputation and the fragility of modern iPhones, I need it.

Going beyond $40 seems a bit ridiculous though

[–] Front-Pollution-6673@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Go caseless

[–] turningtop_5327@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Most I paid was 40

[–] nobodycaresbutyou@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Apple leather case for $13 from woot. I want people know I have means, but not standards..

[–] RedKomrad@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

“A fool and his money are soon parted.” Abraham Lincoln, maybe.

[–] HaloKook@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

While I didn’t buy it for myself I’ve had a Casetify case and I’ve loved it for the year or so I’ve had sure. In college I used Spigen ones and always found they felt flimsy. I’ve dropped the Casetify one countless times and my 13pro is still going strong

[–] Fr0stbite37@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I REALLY like the street fighter design but 72 is ridic. I'll stick with my spigen and put stickers on it. Maybe

[–] HellP1g@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I generally won’t spend over $50 on a case. The Otterbox Defender is $60 so I might make an exception for that since you won’t get much better protection than that thing.

[–] UnmakingTheBan2022@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Why do you care where people spend their money?

Stop gatekeepking.

[–] Projectilepeeing@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I bought one on sale just to try —too thick for it’s own good.

But it did protect my phone when I dropped it 6 ft from the ground. Screen didn’t crack but it also did not work anymore lol.

[–] vimalathithan1803@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Using spigen case for 5 yrs in my xr. Still same as new. Its like buy it forget it for life.

[–] Twin-mama20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’d rather get an OtterBox or something. Right now I have a Walmart case on my 15 plus. My kids have dropped it a couple of times and no issues. Casetify cases look nice but $100 bucks for a case is wild.

[–] solracarevir@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don't know about casetify, but I have paid $60 and more for UAG cases, that are lightweight and rugged and been buying them for 10 years at this point and I will continue to buy them until I die or they go out of business.

I also spend $40 to $50 for a good matte Glass screen Protector like Zagg Invisible Shield ones.

If I'm spending over $1,000 on a smartphone, spending an extra $100 or $150 to properly protect it is a no brainer. a Screen or rear glass replacement will cost you way more.

[–] new_tanker@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think its more about the brand name that's on the package that's commanding the high price tag.

Before going MagSafe I've used several third party brands whose cases were under $20 each, purchased from Amazon, eBay, Five Below, and Walmart and all of them have done the job for me. The only name brand case I've ever purchased was the Otterbox I had for my iPhone 12...

[–] AdministrativeTone89@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I legit bought couple cases for ₹250-300 (~$3 - $5) from local phone shop and still using those :/

[–] stphngrnr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Creating a case isn't expensive. They just put a silly margin on top of it due to demand for these things.

As someone else said here, i also by a £10 Spigen case from Amazon. Dropped my phone many times, hasn't broken. I don't oogle at it as the majority of the time it's in my pocket.

[–] Upstairs-Island7539@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s not surprising at all! And it makes perfect sense. I’ll tell you why.

tl;dr……they have to cover the high cost for their advertising budget while still making a profit margin.

Casetify pays celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo to appear on their advertisements. Then they pay money to plaster those advertisements all over NYC. That can make it quite expensive to turn a profit on a piece of molded plastic…. …on top of the standard costs of doing business.

[–] ShiroHachiRoku@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I noticed them a few years ago too and I think a lot of the pricing is due to the fact that they are licensed to make cases with anime or Disney IP on them. They look nice but I'd never get them. Have you seen their Evangelion AirPods case that's a whole-ass baseball sized robot head that defeats the purpose of pocketability?

[–] ShadowGLI@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I use Spigen cases off Amazon and they’re a fantastic balance of durable and not overkill (I think they have some otter box style cases) but I like the regular ones. $10-15 average

[–] Grayccoon_@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah I don’t get it either, I could never pay that much for a thing with a branding really visible. Like they should pay me to wear that.

[–] Ajskdjurj@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Casely was $25 but I only bought it because it glows in the dark and I really loved it. Casetify prices went really high recently. They were never cheap but..

[–] Aiden066@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I found an OEM iPhone 14 Pro Max case at Marshalls for 15 bucks. Best 15 bucks ever spent. Swear Apple would sell more cases if they were around this price. Not very protective but it’s stylish

[–] SilverLight141@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I've been just fine with my MagBak case

[–] 444Ilovecats444@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

When I first got an ad for Casetify I thought to myself "What pretty cases!" then I saw the prices. Those prices are insane. Not only that i heard stories of people who owned cases from Casetify and shared how unstable they are and how their phones still broke(yes even with the case on). I get myself cases from shein for 1-5$ that are just fine. My most expensive case is a pink silicone case with the apple on the back and I got it for 7$. I am sorry but giving more than 10$ for a phone case is insane.

[–] Visual_Ambition2312@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I can get that case for 30 on eBay

[–] Calibased@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago
[–] RealAmyRachelle18@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

TLDR: a cheap case is higher quality in my experience.

I had a few for my 11 pro max and they were $50 and lasted a year. Only after I bought my 14 pro max the sides were peeling off of the back plastic piece.

I tried two different otterbox cases( symmetry and commuter) and the quality isn’t great anymore.

The two cases I love are the Apple silicone case and the Sonix case.

[–] stevemunoz117@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If for the rest of us who arent “high income” but are still able to afford a phone that can cost anywhere from $800-1200 then it makes sense to spend the extra $70-100 for a case that will pretty much last you for 3-4 years. Its a fantastic, durable case and one of the few brands where i can confidently have peace of mind if i drop it. Then theres customization and the thousands of designs to choose from. To me it makes a lot of sense. Why buy an expensive phone and then half ass it with cheap case?

[–] prettybigbearbeater@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Apple leather and clear case is the best option available since like 2012. But sadly leather is no more :(

[–] mads_61@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think the Casetify cases I’ve bought have been closer to $45.

[–] I_Love_McRibs@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m a fan of ESR cases. Their MagSafe case and accessories are super strong. Case is around $20.

[–] sotko99@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I got a mous for £65/$80-ish and I have to say I felt super bad about paying that much but as I have a stable monthly allowance that I allow myself to spend on random shit, i decided that this time, I’m just going to buy this as it fits my monthly budget and I don’t have to buy stuff every single month.

So yeah for what it is it is expensive but it fit my budget and that is it

[–] titalessspine@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

MOSNOVO is good on Amazon

[–] franky0912@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just use the Torras guardian mag case (about 23€ for me), feels well made and even let‘s u customize the buttons and has 3 colored aluminum action buttons, crazy value case.

[–] IfIWntdHmmrCalnUrSis@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Caseify is actually a pretty friggin resilient case. I have a Gear4 with the D30 crap that hockey goalie pads are made from. IPhone 14 Pro Max fell off roof of lifted Jeep @ 55ish mph. Phone destroyed, but also notified all my emergency contacts that I'd been in a collision, AND CALLED EMS!!! I found my phone in the street smashed af and then I see a fucking firetruck and ambulance racing up the highway so I bolt out of the road after pucking up the phone and they slow down until they're stopped right where my phone was on the ground at. I ran back towards the firetruck (in hindsight that wasn't the best idea) the firetruck driver threw on all the floodlights, presumably looking for wreckage, and everyone except the driver jumped out of the firetruck and started rushing towards me. The look of relief/disappointment on their faces made me feel shitty for wasting their time, but also reducing the number of available EMS for someone who could've potentially needed them. My lady's iPhone 14 Pro is in a caseify or whatever, it was like $95. I thought it was fuckin outrageous too but her phone just survived a fall from a 3 story balcony onto the sidewalk below.

[–] wethsilkosz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i think most people buy them due to the official collaborations ex.) hello kitty, pokemon, one piece etc. its hard to find decent cases that don’t look unbelievably cringe for some of those properties, most younger people nowadays do not care about how protective a case is they just want it to look cool and be themed around a property they like

i mean come on, a lot of people on this subreddit are buying the newest model iphone every year and just for what? to play apple arcade and browse reddit? 99% of people don’t need a new $1200 iphone every year yet theres millions who are constantly upgrading to get the “newest tech” when most of the time it is very lackluster upgrades between iphone generations

[–] ComplaintKey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I actually haven't seen their cases before. I just checked them out and thankfully I don't see anything worth the cost (to me). I thought this was going to be a reverse psychology sort of thing where I go to their site and fall in love with a $100 case
