Hi! Can You help mi choose?
I am using now base model MPB 13" M1 but I need to upgrade.
Most difficult task that I will do is video editing in Davinci Resolve. For simple edits even my old macbook is ok. But when I add some heavy effects like masks, stabilizers, color change etc. ... it's pain in ass...

Now at similar price there is:

  1. Macbook 16" M1 Max, 10‑CPU/32-GPU, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD
  2. Macbook 14" M3 Pro, 12-CPU/18-GPU, 18 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD

I watched so many benchmarks with different result and even it didn't answer my questions. I don't care if video will export 30s faster or slower. Most important thing for me is fluent playback while editing with some heavy effects.
I don't care about size, but M3 pro has a slight advantage in longer OS support. So which one will You choose?

can you explain why?

The benefits of the M3 Max are realized w/ a 3D workflow, or rendering.

With the M1 Max.. There’s not a noticeable difference when actually using Resolve or other 2D apps. The playback difference will be negligible.

For me, the 16 inch display provides value every time I use my M1 Max. I don’t plan to game on my Mac or use Blender, so more CPU/GPU power doesn’t add value to my workflow.

If your workflow/ego require the newest and best thing out right now (with the smaller screen) go for the M3.

If you want value, go for the M1 Max.. I’d bump it up to 2tb and you’ll still come out ahead vs M3 Max

I also use use davinci resolve and recently purchase the M1 Max 16” 64gb 1tb and it will run most effects very smoothly. I’m sure it will run smoother than the M3 pro since the pro has half the gpu cores. If you want an M3, you’ll need to step up to the M3 Max 30 core which may be slightly faster than the M1 Max 36 core. I can’t find any comparisons but it should be at least the same if not faster and it has hardware ray tracing and shadowing built in if your effects use those.

I'm not a Graphic, Photo or Video editing user. but I tested and ran benchmarks on these 3 devices all 16 inches:

M1 MAX 32GB/32 core GPU

M3 PRO 36GB/18 core GPU

M3 MAX 64GB/40 core GPU

Testing and using the 3 for few days results and my opinions:

-Cinebench 2024 winners =

1)M3 max wins and beats both (in all three tests) specially in the GPU test but its runs hotter and louder than both also it loses more battery (all devices are set to high power mode)

2)M3 pro beats the M1 MAX in all test Multi single and GPU, it battery and temps are better than both M1 max and M3 max in all tests and power modes

My work and every day normal use : I run windows 11 and Kali on Parrales I use cybersecurity tools like Burp suite Nessus pro to perform web tests, Office 365 , multiple browsers , VPN's , RMM apps and others.

all three devices runs smoothly and fast the M3 pro has the best Battery and temps the only down side for me that sometimes I eatup the 36GB f memory and it starts using the SSD.

all the bests
