He also played Kunta Kinte in Roots. LeVar Burton has a pretty cool acting career.

He also directed the Star Trek DS9 episode "Bar Association". That's the episode where Rom embraces Marx, and O'Brien lets us know what sort of people are more than heroes.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 25 points 2 years ago

Oh shit I did not realize he directed that episode! By far one of my favorite star trek episodes, rommunism quoting Marx and quark recoiling like a vampire confronted with a cross was chefs-kiss

Thanks for reminding me that I need to watch DS9 lol. Didn't Burton also get into episode direction during TNG or was that just Frakes?

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A lot did. Stewart direct some, LeVar, I think gates McFadden directed a couple. Everyone but garret wang

[–] axont@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Garret Wang directs an episode where Ensign Kim is finally promoted and then demoted the very next episode without explanation

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The irony is that he did ask to and Rick Berman shut him down despite no other cast member being turned down after Frakes broke the seal. Dude got fucked over so hard.

The more I learn about behind-the-scenes stuff on various Star Trek productions, the more surprised I am that so much of it turned out well despite the abusive assholes who ended up in most of the producer and executive producer roles. Berman and Kurtzman are the real villains.

Violence against fascists is always justified and based.

cw: accidental transphobia/badly phrased. My thought process is explained below. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it the way it sounds. Leaving for context.

spoilerHiding your fascism behind "think of the children" and the bits you were born with is cowardly, even for fascists.

One of the things I love about the sci-fi TV show Babylon 5 is that this is it's core message.

So glad I finally watched that over the summer. On my 2nd go through now. Season 1 is so much better when you know what's a subtle set up

bits you were born with

What do you mean?

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I should have said it differently. I obviously understand that genitals do not equal gender. I'm rather tired today, and was thinking of it as like, she thinks women are people with vaginas, so when she says women(/in the case also mothers), she's just hiding behind her genitals. I hope I explained that okay.

I'm sorry if I upset or bothered you.

[–] emelia@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

Thank you for taking the time to explain what you meant. No worries :)

[–] axont@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Pretty sure they mean the bioessentialist rhetoric of gender comes from genitals at birth. It's an absurd claim that transphobes hide behind.

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

I absolutely agree with you. I phrased myself badly. Women solely being people with vaginas is her view, that's why I said it that way. She boils being a woman down to what you were born with, so when she employs "women" that's what she means. I was (still am) very tired. I'm sorry. Trans women are women, genitals do not determine what you are.

If LeVar Burton thinks you're trash then you should probably re-evaluate who you are. He's cool as hell and I met him at my school once! He was handing out books to kids because he really does take child literacy seriously because he's cool as hell

LeVar Burton is a wonderful person and I got into the humanities because Reading Rainbow got me interested in them, true story.

I think he also raises a lot of money for AIDS research too.

The giggly way MAGA chuds use their dog whistle "does this bug you? Are you TRIGGERED?" gestures is so fucking exhausting. grillman

Someone got me a shirt that says "Levar Burton says read banned books" and it's beautiful.

[–] terrytec@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

I wish I was LeVar Burton

Liberty? I don't think that means whatever THEY think it means. It certainly does not mean or imply safety.
