I had forgotten that specific Australasian lib flavor of smug where they oppose any sort of regulation and fervently assert that the victims deserve it, except they love government intervention when it protects them.
I know libs anywhere are like that, but imo something about the smugness hits different.
I remember one particularly sanctimonious Aussie that was shitting on people for having candy ready for trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
I don't even mean in Australia. I mean in countries that typically do have general populations that observe Halloween. The hostility was toward even the idea of anyone giving free candy to kids wearing costumes wandering around for the sake of getting free candy. I have plenty of criticism of the US, but damn, one day of vaguely community-driven fun for kids was shit on with lots of petty nationalistic wanking all the while.
