Hot take alert I know

But there's a big difference between what he's done versus what guys like Nagy, Tristan, and others have: his side of the ball is playing well.

Nagy and Trestman were offensive background coaches who could not field competent offenses. While there is a lot of scrutiny of the Bears offense this year, the defense has turned it around lately after getting healthy and certain players stepping up.

If this defense finishes the year as a top 15 or 10 unit, wouldn't it be counter productive to clean the entire house? Continuity on the defensive side of the ball and in the building may be what's best for this team instead of another complete tear down. Players like Kyler Gordon, Jaquan Brisker, Dexter, Edwards, and others fit this scheme and are becoming comfortable in it and experienced in it. Bringing in a new coaching staff and scheme potentially means scheming some of these players out and starting from square one on developing and building a defense.

I see every reason to move on from Getsy and the current offense. And with a potential top QB available with the draft starting fresh on that side could be what's best for the team. But that doesn't have to include the D and Eberflus too.

I think the way the D plays the rest of the year is going to be the biggest determining factor in whether or not Eberflus is retained. We've also seen CJ Stroud succeed with a defensive minded head coach too so the old narrative that a young QB needs to be married to a young offensive minded HC isn't necessary. Guys like Eric Bienemy may even be available to OC this off-season if Washington cleans house.

I'm not here to be a an apologist for Eberflus. He has had bad moments and should be on the hot seat. If his defense can't keep it together the last half of the season then by all means he should be gone. But I also don't wanna see the Bears come to some unnecessary conclusion that we have to tear everything down again and start from the beginning when their could potentially be ways to compete sooner.

Good coaches don't lose 14 straight games.

[–] MiddleNameIsJoe@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Trestman couldn't put together a competent offense?

[–] ChadBroChill92@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The QBs we face the last 7 games of the year are:

-Jared Goff twice

-Josh Dobbs

-Jordan Love

-Desmond Ridder or Taylor Hieneke

  • Dorian Thompson- Robinson with Watson done for the season

  • Kyler Murray

I’d rather let give Flus another year than let Poles pick another HC and waste even more years.

A defensive coach who has had league bottom defenses, and holds an offensive coordinator who doesn't build systems to his players skill set.... and yet this guy thinks it would be good for him to stick around.

[–] alexamerling100@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Need to get rid of Getsy at least if we keep Flus

We have one of the lowest sack and pressure rates in the league. We're near the highest points allowed per game. We're dead last in turnover differential. Our defense is performing very much below expectations.

[–] TLEH-IV@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

We have a defensive head coach and have a terrible defense and yet we're going to bring him back with a record of 6 and 21. Truly fucking delusional. We have a good run defense because teams can just pass the ball with absolutely zero pass rush, its not because we actually have a good run defense.

[–] Critical-Adhole@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He will 100% not be fired even if we lose out

I'm gonna have to stop you right there. You are comparing Bears coaches based on their predecessors, which is flawed at the outset. You should be comparing them to NFL coaches around the league.

Our coaches have all been terrible since the mid 2000's. Being a high mark among Bears HCs is one of the lowest standards you can set.

Eberflus' defense has improved against the run big time in 2023. I don't take that for granted. But our pass defense and ability to generate pressure is not good enough. Eberflus is a "pretty solid" DC on good days, and that's probably his peak.

[–] cmacfarland64@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If we get him a competent O coordinator, he can be successful.

[–] ImEvadingPermaban@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only people who want Eberflus fired are the fans. This is Ryan Poles team and Eberflus is HIS coach. He built the team with and for Eberflus. He made a weird trade and overpaid Sweat in an attempt to keep him as coach.

People talk about Poles being "forced" to sign Flus. If anything Flus is forcing him to hire someone else by continuing to stink. Would a new coach even want to run a 4-3? If not than the team is essentially totally starting over with worse players than we had in 2021. Poles does NOT want to do that - it makes every move he has made so far pointless.

QBs Flus has beaten: Trey Lance, Davis Mills, Mac Jones/Baily Zappe, Sam Howell, Brian Hoyer, Bryce Young

Coaches Flus has beaten: Kyle Shanahan, Lovie Smith (fired), Bill Belichick, Ron Rivera (likely fired), McDaniels (fired), Frank Reich (likely fired)

[–] Gleasonryan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

John Fox got a 3rd year, I think there is quite a good chance that Flus also gets a 3rd year.

[–] debar11@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Trestman’s offense the first year was one of the best in the NFL. Flus’ D has been one of the worst until we ran into a couple of bad offenses. Let’s see how it goes.

[–] HereJustBcuz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

How is this sub so low IQ. Honestly how

[–] hallstar07@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The defense has improved from being dog shit to being mediocre at best. We can stop the run but even that’s skewed because teams don’t need to run it against us. They can just throw all over us so why would they run. The defense also hasn’t showed up against a good offense. Maybe Montez Sweat will elevate us to being a good defense but it’s also not a good sign that eberflus made no adjustments to get pressure. He just rushes 4 and the opposing qb has all the time he needs to find the open read.

[–] Matzah_Rella@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I just threw up in my mouth.

[–] Timegoat@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I wonder if firing head coaches with bad records in the first 2 years during a rebuild might be a bit hasty. Also there’s a chance constant coaching turnover negatively impact player development.

[–] xtototo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They are going to wait to ensure they get the #1 pick before hiring a new coach, and they’ll promise them Caleb Williams. That’ll help them get the best coach possible.

[–] Goozy89@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Op in all seriousness what the hell are you talking about

[–] Paran0idMan33@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t care how well the defense is playing. He’s the head coach, so if they don’t start winning some games, he’ll be gone.

[–] bpo001@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Nah, Eberflus sucks. His defenses are statically bad, and his team is always unprepared. No discipline and take way too many penalties. He doesn’t know when to use timeouts. The guy is in over his head. Cut bait and start over with a real head coach.

[–] ParticularGlass1821@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Nobody better say "you don't change horses midstream" or I am going to have 2004 ptsd. Flus has to go.

[–] Bearicide93@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

His coaching staff is falling to pieces, he gives half assed answers in interviews, and clearly doesn't have any really sway in the locker room.

[–] MoistTheAnswer@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only way Eberflus is back is if we string some wins together (need 7+) and decide that we’re going to keep Justin.

If we’re letting Justin go and we finish 5-12, Flus is gone. If we go 7-10 and letting Justin go, I can see Flus being fired still.

In other words, it’s going to have to take a lot to keep Matt here.

[–] AlmightyDolphin21@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only thing I’ve seen from him or his staff that’s slightly redeemable is his second half defensive adjustments (defense only not offense) and often times that doesn’t matter cause our base scheme is the most archaic in the league and teams have known how to exploit it for years.

Outside of that. I haven’t seen 1 thing that he does well if not better than the top half of the league. This is the most pivotal offseason for the bears in a decade and we’re gonna fuck it all up just like always. So what does it even matter that we’re talking about this?

[–] Kazu2324@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bears are still one of the worst defenses in the league. 13 sacks, lowest in the league, complete misuse of our biggest FA pick up in Edmunds. I refuse to believe he suddenly just started sucking. He was really solid with the Bills and just seems like Eberflus has no idea how to actually use him properly. Run D is good but the pass D is still mediocre at best and we have the worst pass rush by far.

We recently played the Panthers and the Raiders, who are two of the most anemic offenses I've ever seen and that's coming from a Bears fan. We're about to play the Lions twice and the Vikings in the next 3 games. If they can actually stop those teams, then maybe I can give you something. But the Chargers dropped 30, even the Saints scored 24 on us. Not buying that they're anywhere close to a top 10 D or even a top 15.

Also run D has been really good because in the last 6 games, we haven't played a single team ranked above 22 in rush yards per game. The best rushing offense we've played so far was the Broncos and they were ranked 20th when we played them. Since then, they've become the 12th but their offense has gotten a lot better compared to when they played us.

Just here to say I love your username OP. Can and a half.

[–] Dunkypete@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Whats his record?

[–] UnitShot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Good decision is when I stopped reading. Have you heard this guy talk for even a minute?

[–] ThisIsWayyTooHard@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Any mention of “hey it may not be a bad thing if Eberflus stays” makes me want to snorkel in the Chicago river. There is not one god damn scenario where him being back is a good thing. I don’t care that the defense he coaches has finally looked competent against bad opponents after 20+ games.
