In addition, Sweden “will actively support efforts to reinvigorate Türkiye’s EU accession process,” the statement said.

There we have it.

Lmao Turkey will never make it to EU. It's just Erdoğan's way of fooling the Turkish people

[–] taladar@feddit.de 0 points 2 years ago

I wouldn't say never but he is certainly one of the biggest obstacles to EU membership of his country.

I really doubt Turkey would mix well with EU values, both on political and cultural level.

[–] zoe@lemm.ee 0 points 2 years ago

it sure won't

Well if it's only talking again then I see no problem. After all the problem the EU has with Turkey still exist and all need to agree with them joining. Good luck getting Greece on board.

So basically Sweden has promised to try to get the process starting again but they will then just run against the same wall of opposition Turkey is already facing. But I guess if Turkey manages to blackmail 26 more states then they can get somewhere.

Everyone, almost, in the EU want Turkey to accept our values and become more us, and would be happy to support it if it had any chance of succeeding. (For differing values of "our" and "us").

So nothing to see here.

I can't see how a state with a muslim major population will align with the EU in regards of human rights. Unless Atatürk jumps out of the grave and beats Erdogan to death with a steel chair I can't see how religion and state will sufficiently be separated in Turkey.
We already have a religious hardliner in the EU with Poland and they're already a pain in the ass when it's not about fighting Russia.

Well, it was sort of the point that there are things we won't accept that Turkey is unlikely to relinquish.

That said apart from maiming baby boys on their penis, Islam works just as well with reasonable modern European values as Christianity.

Ok, ok, just as poorly.

Oh come on. Turkey legalized adultery as one of the prerequisites for joining the EU, and despite that and other changes their application was still turned down.

Greece has a state religion and a long history of unfairness to religious minorities and they were still allowed to join the EU. Catholic Ireland didn’t legalize abortion until 2018 but they’ve been an EU member for ages.

As a Swede, I was really hoping they wouldn't. Fuck :(

Are you anti Sweden in NATO or anti Turkey in EU? The guys below think the second while on the face of it it sounds like the first.

[–] sudoreboot@slrpnk.net -1 points 2 years ago

Both, but I meant the former.

Like it will make any difference lol. It's a sound bite to make Erdogan look victorious for the Turkish population. After all, the only reason Erdogan originally opposed Sweden was to drum up support for the election.

Sweden will say 'Maybe we should reconsider Turkey?'

EU: No.

Sweden: Oh well, guess I tried.

Sweden: "come on, what's keeping you guys from accepting?"

Eu: "Turkey's failure and/or refusal to meet our absolute minimum requirements for membership"

Sweden: "gotcha, well, we did our part!"
