Just curious with the Fields debate. Has there ever been a QB mid-way through their 3rd year or later with so much uncertainty develop into a reliable starting QB? Alex Smith comes to mind but obviously wasn’t good enough to keep his position.

Yes. It's pretty common to allow QBs to develop and not expect them to play at an All-Pro level their first few years. If it happens (like in CJ Stroud's case), great. But expecting a QB to come into the NFL and immediately light it up is a recipe for disappointment.

Or Justin Hebert or Andrew Luck

Someone explain this. If you watch the first half of almost all our games we were balling offensively. KC is the only one we were bad all around. Second half and Getsy tries to make both our QB’s drop back passers. STUPID!! The O line is just now coming together and playing decent. Why would you take one of the most dynamic athletes in the league and try to make him Dan Marino???? You can still hand the ball off from the shotgun, rpo, put him in motion to either side. That brings the LB’s up opening more of the field. I’ve been a Bears fan since 66 and Fields has the potential to be a premier passer qb in this league. But, Getsy is going to ruin him trying to make him Rodgers.

That’s kinda the reason for my post. I know he’s been injured but we’re midway through his third season and still talking about potential. He Intermediate game is still very much lacking and he takes too many sacks. Hopefully it was the OL that was the problem and he’ll prove the doubters wrong the rest of the year. I was just looking for examples of that actually happening in the past. Most people listed changes coaches/team. Can these coaches and Fields get it done and if not who goes. Coaches, Fields, both or give everyone one more year. I am rooting for him.

Geno Smith had been pretty much written off as a journeyman backup prior to coming to Seattle where he has consistently outplayed Russell Wilson over the past season and a half.

Geno Smith?

Not when the QB can't read a defense or progress past the first option.

[–] CutMeDeeply@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There's video evidence showing him going through reads. Yall just be saying anything 🤣

I also think people are panicking with the whole Fields franchise QB or not franchise QB debate. The expectation is very high but also having the possible top pick to select a QB adds to this. If we look at all great successful QBs in the history of the NFL, not one was able to succeed with the same scenarios we have had in the past 3 years. Not enough players to build core team and not the right coaching staff to develop offensive and even defensive. It's what killed Lovie and still until this day, the Bears have never had a QB friendly coaching staff that we can actually say has the experience and track record of developing QBs. That along with other factors have created a huge mess for Bears having a franchise QB.

I'd say wait until the season ends to make a final judgment on Fields. And even then it would probably not be a fair assessment.

Jared Goff is another good example of a guy who has had ups and downs. He was awful his rookie year. Had a couple pretty good years under McVay and then was considered awful again and shipped off to Detroit. He was terrible when he was first there and now is more than serviceable.

I think this example just shows how much the coaching and supporting cast matter. Fields clearly has talent. A decent coach should be able to get something out of him. Getsy has shown he can do that when it seems he “wants” to. It’s just mind blowing sometimes when he clearly goes away from his QBs strengths. He did this with Bagent in the Saints game too.

Does Jalen Hurts count? If I recall correctly, there were doubt about him at QB after his second year.

Recently would be Geno. He went from an awful situation with bad coaching and players to a good situation with one of the best coaches and supporting cast. Tannehill could be another but that falls into the same boat.

Not without a coaching staff that gets what he can and cannot do.
