I liked the music and the limited (small) open world quest design. I didn't like that overworld progression was behind arbitrary species captures, so maybe look up which beasts to catch for those.

The rock paper scissors effective damage thing is replaced with bespoke status effects, with a net result of a much shallower battle system. The fusion mechanic works but also feels a bit shallow eventually.

The story has a lot of variety in tone that I feel would be polarizing... I personally liked it.

Meh. It's on Game Pass (PC and Xbox) if you've got that. Idk if I'd pay full price for it.

It's short but has a more interesting story than most Pokemon games. The fusion mechanic is neat but you don't get to use it enough to see all the combos, really. The type system is weird and harder to keep track of. The AP system makes battles a bit more interesting (you get 2 AP/turn, and big moves cost more). There are platforming puzzles and you can find harder battles as well. The quest system is okay, but at a certain point you just want to be able to get the game to tell you exactly where to go instead of having to decipher clues.
