From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

If all the apps are in React Native I feel like they are gonna have a bad time. If you're not careful React Native apps have bad performance, and Fire TVs don't have a lot of performance to spare.

As. Someone who is incredibly poor and use my current fire stick as a way to help me because of accessibility for my disabilities. Does anybody know if there's a alternative to Chromecast, fire stick or Roku that doesn't involve another computer (which I could get a raspberry pi or another computer dedicated to media, but government doesn't believe in giving disabled people enough for those things)

but government doesn’t believe in giving disabled people enough for those things

Instead of subscribing to whatever streaming services you're using roku for, you could be streaming everything for free here: https://fmoviesz.to/

Use the money you save to buy a raspberry pi and wireless keyboard+mouse combo then you're off to the races.

I don't pay for my streaming services. My mom who is barley surviving too and others pay for it. Had no choice really. Sense I have zero income it's hard to save up. (been battling the government for nearly 6 year's to get SSI or anything to help )

You always have a choice when it comes to entertainment, especially digital.

Tell your mom who is barely surviving that she can stream more things for free than what she's getting with her subscriptions.

Spread the love.

That will never happen, they're at leat 10 years behind in the race.

15 (Android 1.0 released in 2008), and yeah it's not just the OS, that's fifteen years of app development by hundreds of thousands developers... there's just no way to catch up to that. I can't see many users choosing to switch platforms unless they make it compatible with existing Android apps, and I can't see many developers bothering to make their apps compatible with a third mobile OS unless Amazon pays them to do it.

If they make it the OS for their own devices they can basically force it into the market... but of course if it's terrible then people will stop buying their devices.

That's what I meant. The OS itself is the easiest part, making it popular and gathering 15 years of experience regarding app compatibility, development, etc., in a year or two, that's the hard part.

2 players (iOS and Android) is more than enough (MS lost the war, that is apparent to everyone). Sure diversity is good, but not at all costs. If they make it like you said "hey, you can run Android and iOS apps here, as well as our own apps", sure, I'd say it has a future... a long and hard road ahead, but you can't beat cross app compatibility cuz they'll probably be the 1st on the market to make that work out of the box on their OS. Other than this scenario, I just can't see anything else being a viable option for them 🤷.
