I've been pretty neutral about the changes on watchOS 10. I understood that people don't like changes -

but it's been 2 months now and I still try to bring up the control center the old way, I still try to access my most recently used apps the old way and I'm still annoyed by having submenus everywhere where watchOS 9 was straightforward with everything. watchOS 10 is the most unintuitive Apple experience I ever had.

Old top menu bar, one line leaving space for the actual content

New top menu bar with huge buttons at the top, pushing down the actual content

Probably the worst part on my 40mm SE is that the colorful backgrounds made all app icons on watch faces smaller (there has recently been a post about this) and I keep missing icons when clicking them. I sometimes need to click an icon 4 times until it registers, along with the colorful backgrounds and unnecessarily huge flashy other buttons this feels like a $50 knockoff Watch to me now.

Also what did they think when changing the menu bar at the top? It used to be one small line (picture 1) but now on my 40mm Watch about 1 fourth of the screen is covered by each app's title or clock (picture 2). I know what app I'm in, I don't need half the screen (exaggerating yes) covered to be reminded of the app I'm using.

watchOS 10 must've been designed by someone who doesn't really use their Apple Watch much I assume. I'm not blaming them, everyone can make mistakes when the goal was progress but it's not like a mistake has to be set in stone. Just roll it back or give us a choice between design and functionality - I personally prefer functionality, it's not like watchOS 9 was so ugly that it needed a re-design to begin with.

It bothered me for a couple of days. Now I prefer it.

Apple jacking around saying, “Oh you LIKED something. Here we can fix that.”

Misanthropically bad.

I have only two complaints about WatchOS 10: one, the app switcher is unusable now. Two, they took the amount of button presses you need to loop a song from like 2 to 5.

I like it. I just want my battery life back.

[–] colts187@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Bro me too it's driving me crazy!

Honestly, my first Apple Watch is the Series 8 I have. I didn’t spend much time with 9 so for me, I’m sorta used to what it is now with 10. I still do the occasional swipe up for the CC but hey ho. Everyone has their opinion

[–] niko109@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I have never once intentionally meant to open the stack… but as someone who bikes a lot, the new cycling features and power meter support are worth the upgrade alone

[–] variousshits@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The rain complication is always failing to work for me. When I tap it, it takes me to weather and not the percentage of rain at a particular hour. It’s really tiny, but after 18 months of muscle memory, this is frustrating af.

The control center is my biggest dislike of iOS 10. I hate using the buttons and the crown. Before iOS10 I did everything on screen with taps and swipes. One swipe up was replaced with a side button push. Went from reaching with one finger to having to physically grab my watch to open control center, and then let go so I can swipe and tap.

Activity too, I hate it. I used to tap and swipe up once. Now I have to either tap and swipe up numerous times, or use the crown, which I hate using.

I literally don’t see any difference in my day to day other than swapping faces being harder now (that change is dumb af). I quite like the widgets screen but I’d swap how you invoke it with Control Center.

I only dislike the loss of swiping to change watch faces.

I love everything else. I like the new up swipe quick menu. I haven't had an issues with clicking anything. I have a 45 mm one.

I didn't use the watch much before the update, now I do.

I like watchOS 10. A lot.

I've had an Apple Watch since Series 3 and watchOS 4, so I have quite a bit of experience with watchOS.

I'm already use to clicking the side button to bring up Control Center instead of swiping up.

I like how the view of the big Activity wheel snaps into place and stays when I click the crown to go back home (watchOS 9 and older always had it scroll up slightly off the screen, which always bothered me)

I no longer accidentally switch faces without meaning it. The inside of my coat sleeve is somehow conductive enough that it would register as touches/swipes, so I'd have a different watch face every few minutes. With watchOS 10 it's like they are "locked" in place now.

I like how apps are in an organized, tall column that I can scroll through instead of a chaotic blob that required me to pan all over, trying to find things.

I like how a quick scroll of the wheel gives me a glance at some apps like weather or activity without having to open them.

Basically, I'm more than happy with watchOS 10, and I think it's one of the best releases, ever.

I've pretty much gotten used to it, though I'm not sure I like it as well. The biggie for me was swiping between faces for use cases (gym, running, etc) but I confess the swipe up to get to "pinned" and/or most used apps is not bad either. I will also say the redesigned Weather app is an abomination; I switched all my weather complications to Carrot Super Duper Hyper Prime Plus or whatever the f*ck it is, which is excellent.

[–] spaceship-earth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

its completely backwards to how it was. cause someone had to justify "change for change sake"

[–] Lee-sc-oggins@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I love it. Truly, it just takes a little getting used to

This is my first Apple Watch. It came with WatchOS 10. I don't know any better.

[–] IcyIceGuardian@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel like the controls are way worse

[–] RideMelburn@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oh yeah im the same. It’s just muscle memory

[–] LocoCoyote@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Love the improvements…so….no

[–] timmayd@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

iOS 10 is a complete failure

[–] fightshade@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The only issue I have with watchOS 10 is the fact they took away the hourly view of the weather when I tap my weather widget.

[–] cplr@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Both of your app screenshots are of 3rd party apps. Not sure how you can blame watchOS 10 for them?

Battery life took a big sheeeeeit

[–] BONEZ024@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Right here. It’s annoying af that they changed key functionality/navigation.

[–] AppropriateAd5390@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Yes to EVERYTHING you said! I wish I hadn’t updated!!!

[–] achu_1997@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Biggest issue for me the extra steps needed to change the watch face

[–] mno86@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I’m not. At all.

The changes they made had absolutely no point and fixed problems that didn’t need solving.

It’s actively bad.

[–] LukasAppleFan@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Smart Stack is quite nice. But everything is weirdly implemented

[–] vegastarlight@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I designed my watch faces so that I could quickly switch between them when I need to. Now I have to stop, hold, switch and tap. IT SUCKS. I used to be able to manage things while biking, cooking, holding kids. No more. I royally hate it and it means I'm not using it, and it's ruining my routines.

There's not one thing that I like about this upgrade. The watch was perfectly fine and worked well. Now it's a dud. I won't be getting a new one and think they really provided a leg up for the competition with this.

[–] Ok-Bat-8721@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think it’s clearly just all in an effort to push consumers towards their newer, larger screened Apple watches.

I haven’t had any issues with the new UI on my AWU but I can completely see how it would have made the experience worse for smaller devices

apple.com/feedback

Let's see if we can get them to rethink this update.

[–] Onepaperairplane@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I thought the OS increase my usage of the watch other than just tracking but it is so cumbersome to use. When the redundancy of bringing up Smart Stack by moving the crown and/or swipe up? Please return to the old swipe up for control centre

[–] SynergyRamoz@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I hope we get an option where we can select the legacy controls along with this new controls. There should be 2 options.

[–] VampyreOfNazareth@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It sucks, I hate it. Might sell watch in fact. Definitely not upgrading.

[–] BobDylanMadHatter@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

OS10 has been such a noticeable downgrade in how I use my watch, other updates made improvements that I didn’t notice and that was great.

Problems I’ve had:

  • rubbish battery life
  • button pressing for control centre is annoying
  • the swipe-up feature that replaced CC adds nothing of value
  • the workout app: adding a new workout to chain multiple together just isn’t as smooth as it was previously
  • when you’re given the list of workouts, it doesn’t start all the way at the top which is jarring
  • when clicking a workout, clearly where I top on the icon open up the “open” or “set goal” section which never happened before
  • workouts randomly pause and therefore, don’t track for my friends
