What player in the NFL, past or present, would you have wanted to see succeed so badly but due to injuries, off the field issues, or whatever happened just derailed their career? For me it was unfortunate to see players like Josh Gordon or Justin Blackmon have their careers end or never getting back on track because of off-field issues.

Why is this answer so far down? He's the obvious answer.

Ryan Leaf. He had the talent. Off-field issues got in the way. Different franchise he might have been huge.

Daunte culpepper.

Sam Bradford's body failed him. Dude was immensely talented and a pretty smart QB. No reason he couldn't have done much more with a real supporting cast as a youngin and better injury luck throughout

Ehhhh he was hopelessly mid

Can you imagine what Barry sanders could have done with an oline and a qb?

Jason Verrett had all the talent in the world at Corner, a shame he couldn’t stay healthy

This will be a wild answer based on everyone else’s in here, but Johnny Manziel with no addictions and a good coach that didn’t hate him for being a lazy shithead would’ve had a great career. When he got drafted he was considered small but in the last decade a lot of teams have moved to smaller QBs with mobility. He’d be a pro bowl player in this years NFL if he actually focused on playing

Aldon Smith might have been the best speed rusher in the NFL at like 24 and pissed it all away.

Martavis Bryant is making a comeback but he always felt like another Josh Gordon to me. Could’ve been awesome but unfortunately couldn’t stay in the league.

Two examples that hit closer to home for me are Aaron Williams and Tre White of the Bills. Tre was a top corner his first few years and has had a stretch of brutal injuries. He looked a little slow last year but was coming back in to shape this year only to get hurt again. Aaron was one of my favorite guys on the defense during the drought, but had a couple of neck injuries and ultimately left on sad terms.

My biggest NFL what-if is Michael Vick. What if he'd benefited from Andy Reid's coaching and some much better off-field support from the moment he was drafted? He could've developed as a pocket passer at the start of his career and avoided the bad crowd and stupid decisions that ruined his potential. I think under those circumstances, he could've been an MVP, maybe more than once, and made the Hall.

How good could Josh Gordon have been if he didn't have substance abuse issues? I know the league was super overzealous with weed suspensions, but he legitimately had major issues. If he had received proper treatment and kicked that stuff, who knows how good he could've been.

I would have loved to see what a healthy Marcus Lattimore looked like in the NFL

Tarik Cohen. He was electric on the field with the Bears, but then he tore his ACL/MCL and fractured his tibia. Then after all that, on Instagram live he popped his Achilles. He was signed to the Panthers practice squad this year and they just put him on injured reserve. I really hope he makes it back. Loved watching him play.

Ricky Williams. Guys are on PEDs in high school football so you KNOW the NFL is rife with them, but hey no weed because it’ll damage sponsor revenue

I was always a huge Bob Sanders fan. He did succeed with a SB, two first team all-pros, and a DPOY award, but his prime/career was cut horribly short from injuries. He only played above 6 games twice in his career, and racked up all those accolades listed above in those two seasons alone.

[–] zco22@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He was a walking hit stick. Such a shame because he was so much fun to watch but yeah that play definitely took a toll on his body

[–] thing4thing@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think a similar, but not as talented or succesful, example is Mike Brown. He played all 16 games his first 4 years and earned a 1st team all-pro, but played less than 8 games in 3 of his final 6 seasons. He was a thumping safety who had a nose for the ball and made big plays, but it felt like we never really got to see him in his prime.

[–] Quirky-Lawyer-3409@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The same reason he was so great is why his career ended quickly. He played so recklessly with his body and it couldn't hold up. If he had played a little less recklessly, could he have played longer? Maybe, impossible to know. But if he hadn't gotten hurt so much and played for just a few more years at that level, he'd be a HOF lock. It would be among the best stretches of defensive play in league history.
