With QBs that have retired in the last 5 years, there are some interesting HOF debates that I see coming up. Right now the sure-fire HOF guys are Brady, Brees, and Rodgers when he retires. The next tier, however, is a lot more interesting. You have Matt Ryan, Big Ben, and Rivers who are all very close. What's interesting is that according to Pro Football Reference's HOF Monitor, they all have fairly similar scores even though they have different resumes. Ryan has the MVP/All-Pro 1 season which is pretty much required unless you have 2 Super Bowls. Ben doesn't have a crazy MVP season, but he does have those 2 Super Bowls and 17 good years. Then Rivers has some crazy counting stats. I think that Ryan and Roethlisberger have a slight edge over Rivers but it is very hard to separate the 3. So my question is do we think any of them make it? If they do it opens up the debate for a lot of players in the future. Also, how do we think the HOF committee weighs Rings/MVPS/All-Pro teams? The media is always so focused on the rings but looking at the resumes of HOF QBs there are a lot more without rings than there are without All-Pro seasons.

Edit: Here is the PFR Monitor. The average HOF QB has a score of 108. Ryan has a score of 106, Ben has a score of 100, and Rivers is at 98.

Two-ring soup.

[–] TheIcy_One@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No chance on Rivers or Ryan. Ben, Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Manning are obvious.

[–] Rod_FC@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben goes in, he has a good combo of durability, efficiency, volume, regular season wins and playoff success, I think he has a much, much better case than Eli, Rivers and Ryan, even if the individual accolades fall short of the players generally included in the Hall at his position. The thing is we can't overestimate the counting stats for the Matt Ryan/Phillip Rivers of the world because in 15 years they'll be what, 14th and 16th in the all time passing yards leaderboards and then what? They were among the first wave to play their whole careers under the post-2004 rule change that made passing explode (and then it exploded again post 2007 or so), of course they'll rank highly in the volume categories. But then there's a good chance they'll be surpassed by guys like Stafford, Goff... I love that the football Hall of Fame is very selective. Don't want to turn it into the NBA, where it's completely watered down.

Ben is a lock and in. The more interesting debate gets when you include Eli. Eli I think has a better chance of getting in than Rivers or Ryan cause of the 2 Super Bowls but week in and out throughout their careers I’m taking Rivers and Ryan as better QBs over Eli

[–] fl1ntfl0ssy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I genuinely believe that in order to make it into the HoF, the NFL story couldn’t be told without you. I think the 2004 QB class (Eli, Ben, Phil) all should make it because they have each been elite and one of the greatest QB classes of all time. They should all make it, fuck it

[–] Five2one521@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben gets in because he has 2 rings. Although his defense is what got those rings. Matt probably not because no SB. Rivers could, but with no rings it hurts. McNabb=No. Romo= No.

[–] vin1223@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They’ll cut it off at Matt Ryan and Phillip rivers. Big Ben makes it

[–] ready4wateva@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Matt Ryan is not a famous nor elite player at the position of Quarterback.

[–] I_Cuck_My_Goldfish@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I would legitimately put Desean Jackson into the HoF before Philip Rivers. Sure he was niche, but he was one of the best deep threats in league history (I say top 3 but I think top 5 is undisputed). NFL record for most career 60+ yard TDs and tied for most 80+. Rivers had solid teams, played at the most important position, and has… nothing. HE DOSNT EVEN HAVE AN ALL-PRO. Man should never get in. Very good, not worthy of Hall of Fame

[–] lamoska1986@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Oddly enough I think Ben gets in because he had the best traits of Ryan and Rivers. He could put the ball in the tightest windows like Matt in his prime but also had more willingness to take risks like Rivers. He would air it out and give his playmakers a chance.

For me the most frustrating thing about Matt is when he got in his own head and wouldn’t force the Ball to Julio when he was in the end zone. The guy was so dominant but Ryan was too timid.

Rivers was a gunslinger. High risk high reward. He had awesome weapons in his career. I think his downfall was he was always in a really tough division for the best years of his career

[–] Lusty-Jove@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

They’ll draw it at 1: Good Stats and either 2: multiple super bowls OR 2: An MVP

Matt gets in, Ben gets in, Rivers and Eli don’t.

[–] Weary-Discipline591@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben is a forsure hall of famer and should be a first ballot. I would take Rivers over Ryan, but I understand on paper Ryan has a Super Bowl appearance and an mvp but if you ask me who was a better QB I would take Rivers over Ryan.

[–] psaepf2009@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The line is somewhere around Matt Ryan and Phllip Rivers, being "the franchise QB" for 10+ years doesn't get you in anymore. I would say probably just south of Matthew Stafford levels of success.

[–] Dry_Emu1721@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Re Philip Rivers: I see absolutely no argument for him making the HoF. A guy who never won a super bowl and was never once in his career a top 3 QB in the league.

So he wasn't the best individual player at his position, and he never enjoyed significant team success...what exactly makes him a hall of famer?

[–] ShouldersofGiants127@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I cant express how mad I'm going to be when Kirk Cousins gets inducted.

For what it's worth, he seems to be a great guy off the field, I just don't think he belongs anywhere near the hall of fame and I have a bad feeling he'll get in without having to wait very long. They really need a standard tho, I think Matt Ryan is a decent place to start from.

[–] humzongers@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think only Ben gets in, Matt Ryan only had 1 above good year, Phillip rivers had none

[–] datcheezeburger1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I think Big Ben is the line between getting in and not, if you aren’t above him you won’t make it. You didn’t mention Eli but I think he’s more likely than Rivers tbh.

[–] xbluedog@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

A player has to be elite among their positional peers. Yardage, completions even in the face of a losing team matters. All Pro years and MVP awards along If I had to put them in order…1) Ben, 2) Matt Ryan, 3) Phillip Rivers. None of them are 1st ballot. It might take 5-6 ballots for each of them given some of the names coming up…

[–] JotatoXiden2@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben should be in. Rivers borderline. Matty Ice no.

[–] Dogsinabathtub@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Philip rivers is the line. I wouldn’t be upset if he gets in but anyone beneath him does not belong I’m

[–] Witty-Jellyfish1218@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Rivers, Ryan, and Stafford all feel like they shouldn't get in...

[–] 0siris0@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If we exclude off the field controversy, then Ben is a first ballot HOFer.

I don't think Rivers or Ryan deserve it. We have a league now that caters to the passing game, they are not anywhere near what Dan Fouts or Marino or Moon or even Ken Anderson had to go through to put up big statistical years.

I'm not to fall on my sword for the guy...I'm not going to blow a gasket if he never gets in...but Eli absolutely should go in over Rivers or Ryan. If Eli only won one, only has one conference championship road win, sure. Exclude. But the biggest moments trump the juicy QB friendly stats of the modern era.

Matthew Stafford, undecided, not wrapped up in him, but he should get in over Rivers and Ryan.

[–] throwahuey1@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

There is no chance Rivers or Ryan get in, not to take anything away from them. Without a single Super Bowl they’d need to have been not just good but clearly elite for five or more years.

[–] jon_pablo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Not sure how hot or cold of a take this is but all 3 are getting in

[–] spazz720@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben, Rivers, Eli, Matt Ryan will all get in.

Ben, Eli & Rivers will be first ballot.

Matt Ryan will probably take a couple, but wouldn’t be surprised if he makes it in first cut.

[–] laika_rocket@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

In an era when the Patriots consistently lapped the field, the Steelers were the next-most successful team for most of Roethlisberger's career. Matty Ice's most memorable career moment is the meme of all memes. Philip Rivers spent his entire career accumulating B+ stats and achieving nothing whatsoever of note.

Would just be fun to see Rivers win is to his 23532634r children, their spouses and their 235283u45234 children could fill the stadium. :)

This Eli slander shall not stand.

[–] -Hells-Bells-Trudy-@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben gets in, Rivers and Ryan don't.

Though I don't think he really deserves it, Eli gets in and I understand why it's going to happen.

[–] SleestakLightning@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben is a lock. The only reason his PFF monitor score is low is because he never got individual recognition during his career because of the era he played. He was right there with the best QBs of his era, took his team to three Super Bowls (won 2) never had a losing season in a season he started the majority of games, put up gaudy individual game stats where he still holds the records, etc.

Guys like Ryan and Rivers had much less actual accomplishments but put up numbers that didn't really mean anything long-term. The history of the NFL cannot be written without mentioning Ben. Ryan is relegated to a mention in the Super Bowl he choked away and Rivers doesn't need mentioned at all unless there's a weird section about sexual potency.

[–] Hey_look_new@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Roethlisberger has the 2 Superbowl wins, plus a 3rd appearance that would have been a 3rd win if not for Fumbly McSlickFingers

He has the Volume stats overall, most wins as a rookie, lead the lead in passing twice, and iirc, the most 500+ yard games in history

[–] elefante88@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Matty Ice was the MVP of the league. He should be in.....

[–] TRES_fresh@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben makes it eventually, Eli is similar to Ben and probably makes it because of the storylines, Ryan doesn't get in (but he would for sure if they won the super bowl, just unlucky for him), rivers doesn't get in either.

[–] Puzzleheaded-Hawk464@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I may seemed biased, but if Rivers is in the conversation based on stats alone, then we have to include Romo in the conversation.

IMO, neither did enough to get in. Ben for sure, Matt is a toss up. But I’d lean towards no.

[–] WiseGuyNewTie@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

The HOF doesn’t mean shit anymore. Literally everyone gets in, even if they were just mediocre.

[–] rickg@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ben gets in easily. The other two do not.

[–] ChicagosOwn1988@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can you tell the story of the NFL without bringing up X player?

You can’t without talking about Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Big Ben, etc

You can without talking about Rivers, Ryan, etc

That’s the line.

[–] Dramatic-Pay-3275@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Phillip Rivers is NOT even in the HOF conversation. It's laughable. He didn't do shit.
