Stolen valour: Issues with wearing military clothing

It describes how wearing military clothing as a civilian, and particularly medals and awards, can be distressing for veterans. The assumption is that people wear the clothing in order to give the impression of being tough, having endured hazardous circumstances - even specifically having served - in order to gain respect and other benefits. Hence, stealing valour.

This is stupid. If you don't wear any of the patches or medals, no sane person will accuse you of stolen valor. Nobody gives a shit if you're wearing old BDUs or ACUs.

That’s literally the whole point of the article, and the author says that thoughts and opinions vary then posted various opinions. Did you just read enough to get to something you could get angry at?

I was quoting the article to refer to a specific section.

If you're gonna get upset with other people voicing their opinions and engaging with the post on a forum maybe you should spend your time elsewhere, champ.

Edit for clarity

So you cherry picked the article out of context of the rest of it to try and say that it’s stupid, when the rest of the article goes into it in more depth? Yea, that’s super engaging post. If you want to post some cherry picked information to get outrage against, I suggest going to Facebook.

Lmao. You mad bro?

Do you want me to summarize the entire article for you? I'm sure you consider yourself to be "super engaging post", right?

I've worn milsurp all my life and never felt any judgement or got any comments, even from my veteran friends and family. The main controversy (in my experience) comes from behavior and how the pieces are worn. If you go out in a full Desert Storm BDU suit and boots, you'll be projecting a much different image than just wearing some combat boots with jeans. I disagree with the author's take on clothing with soldier names on it. While I don't think it's always disrespectful to wear such clothes, I think that the names and badges look tacky and never add to the look of the outfit, speaking purely in terms of style.

The military style looks like crap. There are more comfortable and stylish choices that are just as practical for the civilian life. I wouldn't want to be confused for a soldier ever in my life.

true but I do wear my dad's old vietnam-era fatigue pants. great pocket room, nice cinch on the waist, nice and durable material for outdoors activities, and relatively tasteful camo design.
