If someone gave Ben Franklin a Keffiyeh he'd wear the thing around, incorrectly, for the next year. But blah blah blah desecration

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 82 points 2 years ago (1 children)

He would 1000% use it to pick up women claiming he was a world traveler who has seen exotic sights (and wants to see one more exotic sight nudge nudge wink wink)

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago

The way we remember Ben Franklin is basically just Danny Devito but slightly hornier.

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 75 points 2 years ago (2 children)

He seems like he'd be pulling off those Trudeau publicity stunts constantly. You may not like it but this is what a modern Ben Franklin would be like:

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 42 points 2 years ago

Franklin would be out there claiming to be an "octoroon" to nail more French dilletantes

[–] MarmaladeMermaid@lemm.ee 27 points 2 years ago

Not enough publicity tears 😢

Didn't Ben Franklin learn Arabic through his own copy of the Quran, or am I thinking of a different guy?

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Think that was Jefferson. Supposedly he was big into studying religions, and I seem to remember the first Muslim in Congress being sworn in on the same Quran.

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was Rashida Tlaib, but I think it's an english translation of the Quran!

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago

This was what I was thinking of:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quran_oath_controversy_of_the_110th_United_States_Congress

Apparently the Jefferson Qu'ran thing came later and he was sworn in using a "regular" Qu'ran.

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

Apparently he created an edit of the bible that took out all the miracles and just focused on the stuff that could be applied to secular thought.

Handmaids Tale. A story famously about the desecration of statues of famous white American men

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

In conservative Handmaids Tale, all women will be strippers, but also devout Muslims wearing burkas, and also college students with blue hair. And it’s directed by an extremely horny sex pest who married his wife he’s known for 14 years when she turned 18

The trifecta

so-true "Wow it's just like [entertainment] but the people I don't like are the bad guys!"

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 45 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Didn't the founding fathers own slaves?

[–] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 64 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

At least Ben Franklin had an abolitionist arc later in life. I don't think the intent of putting a makeshift keffiyeh is to desecrate the statue. The protesters are clearly trying to be respectful and win over "moderates" here!

[–] GeorgeZBush@hexbear.net 14 points 2 years ago

It's a good look too!

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 50 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not all of them, but most of them did. Shoutout to Thomas Paine for not being morally bankrupt.

[–] GriffithDidNothingWrong@hexbear.net 37 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The term founding fathers is an unfortunate one. It was a varied group of people with different beliefs and levels of participation. American history always makes it sound like one group of besties who hung out all the time and agreed on everything. I don't think that's what you or dirt were doing but I hear it a lot

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago

A lot of their writings are them constantly talking shit on the other guys.

[–] privatized_sun@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago

tldr, generic radlibs

[–] Ho_Chi_Chungus@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

Not all of them but basically all the ones who made the history books did

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 41 points 2 years ago

I wonder how she feels about the roe v wade shit via a vis comparing to things to hand maids tale

Yah but no a small protest is definitely the same thing

[–] muddi@hexbear.net 37 points 2 years ago

Desecrated

Because the Founding Fathers are a pantheon for the American civic religion? (Answering myself, unironically yes!)

Meanwhile they'll protect the acts of burning Qurans and rendering the Prophet in insulting ways as free speech, and not inciting public religious conflict

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 37 points 2 years ago

I love how she's the self proclaimed voice of Jewish people.

[–] Maoo@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago (1 children)
  1. Franklin isn't holy or sacred whatever how the hell can you desecrate him.

  2. A pro-Palestine group putting a kufiyah on a statue is honoring it, if anything.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago

The American Civic religion certainly has its share of consecrated figures

[–] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 30 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Do the lead pipes in washington rot the memory? Do these people not remember the years between 1995 and 2014 when muslims were the designated targets? Why does Marxism curse me with this recollection of the very recent past.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago (1 children)

desecrated his statue

With a very removable bit of desecration that isn't at all permanent. Are these people capable of thinking?

[–] usernamesaredifficul@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

this isn't even the level of desecration drunk people will do as a laugh

that statue is less desecrated on average as they have shielded it from pigeon shit

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

If anything it's an act of preservation of the statue.

[–] anonochronomus@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Philly comrades stay winning. Maybe I'll hop on the subway and go turn it into a bust with a sledge hammer.

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well, don't do that... especially now that you've posted about it!

[–] anonochronomus@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

Just a joke. I know better than to engage in silly, risky, and pointless adventurism. The sentiment stands though.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 21 points 2 years ago

Meghan McCain having a career is like The Man in the High Castle or some other book she's never read

[–] AsLeftAsTheyCome@hexbear.net 20 points 2 years ago

We need to stop liberals from using similes until we figure out what’s going on.

[–] rubpoll@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

Sometimes I forget that liberals literally care about statues more than any number of human lives.

[–] privatized_sun@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can't help imagining that if that faildaughter ever wrote a resume it'd just be the words "MY FATHER" in massive font on each page.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

That scene from The Shining but it's Shelly Duval discovering Megan's resume
