Saturday, October 28, 2023, Mexico City. On the night of October 27, 2023; at approximately 11: 00 PM, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), together with the National Indigenous Congress (CNI), launched a communiqué titled "In support of our Original Brothers in Guerrero" through the Zapatista web portal in which they called on "men and women of good heart, the collectives of the National and International Sexta and the peoples of Mexico and the world" to be in solidarity with the situation that the Guerrero population is living through as a result of Hurricane Otis.
Hurricane Otis entered the coasts of Guerrero as a category 5 hurricane in the early morning of Wednesday, October 24. Its winds of 260 to 315 kilometers per hour devastated almost everything. The most affected area was Acapulco, where houses, hotels, businesses, schools and many other goods were destroyed by the aggressiveness of these winds, winds that the EZLN dismisses as atypical, since, in their opinion, "it is a direct product of the destruction caused by capitalism, by the ever-increasing damage that large companies and government policies cause to our Mother Earth".
One of the greatest concerns expressed in the communiqué is that, "In the face of these serious events in Guerrero, we observe how the government of the misnamed fourth transformation concentrates its support on the large hoteliers and merchants of the port of Acapulco, while forgetting the thousands of poor families, mainly peasants, who are being affected by Otis." Therefore, both the EZLN and the CNI urge everyone to join in the collection of supplies, which will be directed mostly to the native peoples of Guerrero who have suffered from the ravages of this natural disaster.
