I have long said software needs to have a lifetime warranty for security. You don't need to add new features but if someone is still running windows 95 it needs all security holes fixed.
It's all about the money. That $1,000 phone you bought five years ago that's in mint condition? No more security updates, sorry, fuck off and buy a new one from us.
If they are allowed to drop support like that, it should require mandatory unlocking so people can put secure custom software on it.
I dont think its reasonable to expect lifetime updates, but it shouldn't just suddenly become unsafe to use.
Edit: and im all for extending a mandatory security update period longer than 5y
