Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Pam Bondi, the former US attorney general, will not appear next week for a scheduled deposition before the House oversight and government reform committee to answer questions about the justice department’s handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and its release of the Epstein files, the committee said.

In a statement on Wednesday morning shared with the Guardian, a spokesperson for the House oversight committee said “the Department of Justice has stated Pam Bondi will not appear on April 14 for a deposition since she is no longer Attorney General and was subpoenaed in her capacity as Attorney General”.

“Ms Bondi no longer holds that office,” the letter reads. “As a result, because Ms Bondi no longer can testify in her official capacity as Attorney General, the Department’s position is that the subpoena no longer obligates her to appear on April 14.

“We kindly ask that you confirm that the subpoena is withdrawn,” the letter adds.

The committee’s subpoena has not been withdrawn, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Fantastic, hold her in contempt, arrest her and bring her in.

According to the ranking Democrat on the committee, the subpoena was for Pam Bondi by name, not specifically for the Attorney General. The subpoena is completely valid and legal, and her testimony could be crucial to understand the issue at hand.

She is still legally required to testify, and that's why they're still asking for the subpoena to be withdrawn, instead of simply saying it's invalid.

Imagine if things worked this way in the real world. Your boss notices that all of the money is missing from the cash register, so they report you to the police, but when the police come to conduct an interview, you just say, "I quit that job, so you can't do anything to me."

True but these people all play by a different set of rules then us plebs.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 15 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Almost like they're a separate class...

[–] MisterD@lemmy.ca 11 points 15 hours ago

Epstein class

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 41 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Like that time I was pulled over by a cop for speeding and I said "yeah, but the car is stopped now so you can't ticket me in my capacity as a the driver."

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 10 points 12 hours ago

And you said that after you got out and switched with someone else in the car.

Shit, what a great analogy.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

Why would she? There's no consequences for anything they do.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 36 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Oh yeah everyone knows if you get fired from your job you can’t be held responsible for anything you did at that job

[–] ArtVandelay@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

Brb, going to go embezzle $10 million then quit

[–] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 48 points 21 hours ago

Well yeah, this was probably the primary reason for Trump to fire her when he did.

The argument is bullshit because Bondi is subpoenaed in name, not by her office. It doesn't have to be a good argument, though, because the Supreme Court just ruled that contempt of Congress is meaningless.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 10 points 16 hours ago

How are there still people surprised by this stuff? Until there are real consequences they'll keep doing what they want.

Oh darn it, she's not in the position and the new guy is only acting AG, certainly not privvy to the decisions made by his predecessor. Darn, guess there's no possible way to enact oversight then. Shame.

On wait, actually - huh! It seems there's enough time for BOTH of them to testify! Bring her in as a civilian to answer any questions Blanche says he doesn't know. Wow, who knew 16D chess was so easy.

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago

Indeed. And, if only they originally subpoenaed her as an individual and not as the AG, they could just bring her in anyway because Congress has and exercised that power because of the information she had, not because of her job title.

Wait! Can this be right?! She was subpoenaed as an individual! Oh, that's a relief, now Congress can just move ahead with her testimony without even waiting for Blanche or having to re-subpoena her (phwew, so much time would have been wasted)! I bet everyone involved is relieved.

[–] Lydon_Feen@lemmy.world 19 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Wait... Was she fired for this stupid, pathetic move?

While I agree I sort of wonder if Trump has a request that was a bit too far, like covering up more of Epstein issues than she's already done or saying even something more incriminating to other issues.

The scandals of this administration are like a random stage dude pulling the kerchiefs out of his sleeve, they just keep coming so when one gets buried they find a replacement.

And that's half the battle having us guess why something happened vs what happened but they play 3 card Monty with all the possabilities.

Yes that sounds like a sound government.... Good job united States, you went from superpower to super fucking idiot in 3 terms.i figure Bush 2 only gets super idiot in case you're curious.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

How long until she commits "suicide"?

[–] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 9 points 19 hours ago

I hope she's living every moment of every day utterly terrified of this possibility.

[–] DoctorNope@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

"Well yes, we've already had one constitutional crisis today, but what about second constitutional crisis?" -The DOJ, probably

It sure would be nice if these assholes could take ONE FUCKING DAY off from actively shielding child rapists, subverting the rule of law, destroying faith in government, or undermining the people's interests. I know the firehose of bullshit is the whole point, but god damn.

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 10 points 20 hours ago

DANG NAB IT! They got us Good! Oh well let's send out the Fundraising Texts!

-Democrats!

[–] kikutwo@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

That's, not how this works.

[–] Shadowcrawler@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 19 hours ago

The u.s.a. are nothing more than a banana republic at this point.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

Not true. She's trying to weasel out, but she is bound by law to testify

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

It is a private citizen now in a dangerous and chaotic world it helped to create

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 6 points 21 hours ago

Surprised - NOT.

[–] SkavarSharraddas@gehirneimer.de 3 points 19 hours ago

Straight to jail with her then?

[–] gressen@lemmy.zip 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

What happens is she gets called again as a private person? Will she get defenestrated?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 10 points 20 hours ago

She was called by name, not office, so their justification is bullshit.
