The nicest thing I can say about Tucker is that he is incredibly intelligent at knowing what's in his best interest and being able to backstab anyone who becomes dead weight. He wouldn't be doing this if Trump still had immense political capital and unconditional support from the hard right.

Tucker Carlson is preparing to run for president in 2 years, and differentiating himself from MAGA as an isolationist “America First” candidate. It is likely a miscalculation on his part; most GOP voters remain loyal to Trump, even after everything he’s done in his second term.
