Bicycle Touring and Bikepacking

For all the pedal pushers out there that love long distance cycling. There are no gear requirements and no 'minimum distances' here.

Have you ridden for a cheeky overnighter or a 3 year global trek? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

Have you got panniers, bikepacking bags or just a backpack with the essentials? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

Have you got the latest in carbon engineering or your dads old 10 speed from the 70's? Doesn't matter, you're welcome here.

It was much slower than I usually go due to a lot of wind, some "barely a path" roads along the way, the bike being a citybike meant for daily shopping, as well as the fact that I was carrying 50kg (110lbs) of luggage on my back the whole way πŸ˜„

Excuses for being a slowpoke aside, it was a good challenge for my general health and fitness journey, and a very pleasant ride 😁

Cycling is just awesome, well done!

But I would advise not to wear such a heavy backpack while riding, do I understand it correctly that you have 50kg on your back and not on the bike? That’s a very bad choice for your spine, even if you sit pretty upright

I had to get my cpap machine, devices, clothes etc home after my 3 day visit to my dad's place 🀷🏻

That’s a very bad choice for your spine, even if you sit pretty upright

I have a backpack with good straps so the weight is distributed across the torso (specifically straps at the hips and upper chest in addition to the regular back straps), so that helps a lot.

The main problem was really to not tip over by shifting the weight to the side when stopping at traffic lights and leaning tbh πŸ˜„

Luckily I'm a heavy dude and careful, though, so I only had one or two semi-close calls of that 😁

Ok, but the harness is designed to be worn upright, so the hip belt - which usually carries the load most effectively - cannot work properly because the backpack is exerts shear stresses on your spine, I fear. It obviously depends on how much leaned forward one rides, but it’s not the same as standing/walking.

In the end, you know your body better than anyone, just hope you consider well how you set up your bike :) take care and I wish you many good rides!

That’s about the speed I average when on tour no matter the load. IMHO touring is about seeing new things not proving your cardio capabilities.

That's completely valid. Personally, I greatly enjoy both aspects, and others would argue that it's all about the exercise only.

That all three perspectives can be accommodated is indicative of how great of a hobby it is 😁

Carrying 50kg and only burned 2600 calories. Is anyone else annoyed by how few calories seem to get burned? "WHAT?! That had to be a 10,000 calorie ride!"

I would be more worried of 50kg on the back (as in rucksack I understand) while sitting for hours on a saddle. The lower spine sure wouldn’t thrive?

Yeah, the app doesn't have the capability to account for extra weight lol. I'm not even sure it's accounting for how much heavier than the average person I am myself lol

Do e-bikes sync power data to the watch you’re using?

My specific model and the app I'm using don't (the watch extrapolates the data from GPS readings rather than directly from the bike), but I'm almost positive that some others do 🀷🏻

200W for almost six hours is pretty damn impressive. Your legs must look like tree trunks!

I've been on the exercise bike every day (with very few exceptions, such as the day before yesterday where I did this outdoor ride in stead), so I now have quite muscular legs and a resting heart rate of 55 down from somewhere in the 80s if not 90s before I started 😁
