Empathy fatigue.
I'm an obnoxiously empathetic person. I spent a week in a "mental health facility" last year, and it was an emotional nightmare. I hate seeing people in pain, so being involuntarily admitted into a dumpster filled with people in the worst pain, and at the lowest point of their lives...
Not amusing to say the least.
By day four, I didn't even look up when someone screamed screamed, or i heard the "thud" of someone succumbing to the "let's try you at this dose" reactions of the drugs.
Sometimes you just don't have the empathy to deal with these people, and the older I get, the less empathy and more 'hatred' I have for people that just constantly hurt themselves. Their actions are their own, I'm done trying to empathize or 'understand' their perspective. /rant
oh, this prick is also racist, but claims she just has a “contrarian” personality, saying that immigrants dont deserve homes and that we shouldn’t house people who arent from our native country, only natives, which is so stupid. am i overreacting?

You're not overreacting. This person sounds like they suck, and they would be banned off Lemmy or the Fediverse in a heartbeat. Also, that's not typically centrist, or maybe "liberal", (liberal, not leftist) behavior, sounds more conservative right
When Reddit started, Spez and Aaron made "sock puppet" accounts to make the site seem more active than it was, because you have to have what looks like an active user base to attract more users.
Now, after Reddit has gone public, they need the appearance of lots of users to attract advertising dollars and keep their stock price high, and there's no need to operate sock puppets by hand anymore because of LLMs - they can be the sock puppets, and if you have enough of them acting human enough, it doesn't even matter if some people realise or if one gets called out as a bot.
This also has the extremely useful benefit of steering society slowly towards the ideology of the billionaire, by having those bots normalise hate in the tsunami if messages they post.
