Despite a few initial issues like screen flickering, and a persistent 1fps problem when winning a car, I would say RPCS3 has been easy to setup and the game looks decent upscaled to 4k.

Disclaimer: the image in the post isn’t from my game (its from a wiki) because I’m away from my PC right now.

I bought a red Toyota MR2 GT-S ‘97 ASAP and put some 18” 5 spoke wheels on it. I love this car.

The lack of a 20 minute unskippable intro video, not having someone ranting at me the whole time I try to play and a clear game loop with satisfying progression means GT6 easily dunks on modern games like GT7 and Forza Horizon 5.

Get car, tune car, race car, win car, do the licensing tests and then buy a new car and repeat for the next class. Fucking perfect!

Damn near all my favourite cars are included in the game so modern games offer little more than graphics and claims of a better driving simulation.

I find GT6s driving to be a near perfect mix of sim and arcade with enough options to tweak.

Feel free to discuss what you like about GT6, favourite car/s, other retro racing games and emulators you’ve had experience with. I’m just dropping this post here because I’m so happy with this game.

I'm sure you might be aware of it, but if you aren't.

Try Gran Turismo 4 Spec II. The mod just makes one of the best car games out there even better.

Call me weird, but modern games suck. The more realistic the game the worse it is. Old games feel like actual games. You can feel the hard work put into them. You can feel the value. They’re fun.

Call me weird

Bro, at this point that is the majority's opinion. Some of the biggest hits in recent memory are stuff like Silksong and Terminator 2D.

Indies still put out great games, even if most of the time they aren't designed like retro games.

[–] DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Fuck, man. I literally just said the same thing in another comment. Indie games are loved by young and old people alike. They are games, not a money grab. I’ve felt like new aaa games are all the same with different landscapes

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep, ive been saying this for a while. But I'm also old so some of it is nostalgia however I feel this way for games I never even played in my youth so there's definitely truth to it.

[–] DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I honestly don’t think it’s about age. Games were genuinely better back then. That’s why indie games are loved now even by younger people. I’ve been playing splinter cell on duckstation and shit is so much fun.

RPGs from that era were really good too. They had to do more with less, which meant some ludicrously good games. I remember being blown away by .hack//IMOQ, a full simulated MMORPG with thousands of procedurally-generated dungeons, complete with players you could trade and party with... it even captured the insane levels of grindiness of MMOs of the era (which can be tamed by modern cheat tools if you prefer).

I never did finish it.

I should finish it. :)

Dude all gran turismos are so great. Gt2 on ps1 was fricken ahead of its time.

10 years ago i bought a used PS3 for 50 bucks pretty much only for GT6. I liked it a lot and even got myself a Logitech G27 racing wheel. I remember that h-shifting with a clutch kinda sucked because of an artificial delay you needed to maintain so the shifts get registered. Like i understood the idea behind it that real cars dont shift instantly and the gears need to fall in place or whatever. But as a european i knew how to drive with a stick. At the time i havent even driven an automatic car at all. That forced delay drove me crazy.

Anyway otherwise its a great fucking game and i really want to get back in to it. But not on the og PS3. I want some upscaling and i remember it couldnt hold the framerate that well even on og hardware. The last time i checked GT6 was still kinda janky on RPCS3 but maybe its time to finally check it out.

When it comes to racing classics i had a really good time with emulated PS1 and PS2 games with retroachievements in the last two years. Colin Mcrae Rally, NFS, Midnight Club 1-3, Test Drive Eve of Destruction, Test Drive Unlimited (PS2), GT2, GT4 Spec II Mod, Enthusia etc.

The 5th and 6th gen era just has so many bangers and the emulation is just rock solid and with retro achievements i have an additional carrot on a stick to actually finish them. 7th Gen emulation is still a bit hit and miss in my experience. Atleast if you also want your games upscaled and with 60fps hacks. But the first Forza Horizon on Xenia is also pretty awesome. But needs a bit reading up and fiddling to get working alright. It actually has a good single player progression unlike later titles in the series.

TDU on the PS2 deserves its own shoutout. I would compare the driving physics to the very best the PS1 has to offer but in a PS2 game with a insanely big map for that hardware. The trade-off is a bit ugly and samey graphics but its good enough. But casually playing through the game until the big race around the whole island was a blast and took me around 10 hours. Completing every single race in the game is a bit of a drag with ~35hrs of playtime from what i've read. But i just didnt do that.

Enthusia is also kinda a hidden gem. The career/progression system is a bit odd imho and infirior to GT4. I cant even explain it right now. Atleast its kind of a bit of fresh air. But the driving physics are insanely good and fun.

I want to be your friend. I have all those ps2 games and love them

I don't have a wheel setup so I appreciate gamepad centric racers. I need to spin up GT6 on RPCS3. I just occasionally try GT Sport on shadps4 to see if it works. I at least own the first project cars on steam before it was delisted. The only current game I'm planning to buy on deep sale is automobilista 2

I’ll try to drop a little write up here on the steps I took to resolve some of the jank which might help others like yourself.

I always felt something was off with Project Cars and never purchased it. I might see if I can find a PS4 copy.

I recently and regretfully picked up The Crew Motorfest which I quickly refunded due to Ubisofts always online bullshit causing constant crashes on Linux.

I want to emulate Project Gotham Racing as well.

One thing that truly stands out to me is how much time GT7 wastes not just interrupting me with ‘normie’ explanations of cars history that I already know more about. It’s the animations that make it take forever to do anything.

GT6 on a PC with an SSD means anything you select is basically instant. I’m almost certain I could finish 5 races in GT6 before finishing 4 in GT7 just due to menu animations.

Sorry for the long comment!

I presume you also didn't need an expensive PCIE 4 NVME SSD like PS5 that makes it hard to also expand storage to get those speeds either and just used a SATA or USB one.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

I only have NVME drives in my gaming PC currently but you could absolutely use a SATA drive without issue

[–] foodvacuum@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Haven't played the ps4/XOne forza or GT games. Project Cars doesn't seem to wordy to me. Project Gotham Racing would be fun but Xenia has always been finicky for me though I've only ever tried on Linux

[–] datavoid@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Forza Horizon is a good time if you aren't wanting realism, probably my favourite of the racing games. I'd consider it a successor to PGR due to the drifting.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is it working now? It was broken last time I tried.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

It required some tweaks to get it mostly working. Right now the only issue is when I get prize care and it drops to 1 fps.
