We require headlines match the original, I'll give you time to fix it before removing it.

"After Montreal trip blocked, Rima Hassan arrested in France over social media post"

not a great rule considering how much clickbait even reputable news outlets engage in these days... can see it a bit even in this one...

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The knife cuts both ways, in this case the post title is ragebait

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 22 hours ago

the post title is ragebait

Seems like the events are rage bait

[–] nieceandtows@programming.dev 1 points 15 hours ago

Both good points

[–] GreenBeanMachine@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You as a poster should find a more reliable source then, than shitty articles with clickbait titles.

And you are free to downvote/skip/block other's clickbait titled posts.

This politician is a tankie nutjob who happens to be a pro-palestinian activist.

She voted against every single EU resolution condemning Russia's war on Ukraine.

She shared on social media a picture of a politician with this message :

"He is a friend of genociders. He sleeps well at night. That will not last long"

Then he received this message :

"I see your scared eyes in the halls of the European Parliament. You should be afraid. It's just the beginning"

He ended up going to the police.

More recently, the French writer Boualem Sansal was jailed on bullshit charges in Algeria.

https://www.pen-international.org/news/algeria-novelist-boualem-sansal-sentenced-to-five-years-in-prison

He did not have a fair trial. He didn't even get access to a lawyer.

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to condemn his arrest and demand his release.

Rima Hassan was one of the only MEPs to vote against this resolution 🤦

One week ago, the EU Parliament issued a warning against her:

The President had decided to impose a penalty on Rima Hassan for having recorded during a plenary session a Member of the European Parliament without his consent, and having subsequently disseminated the video on her social media accounts, accompanied by a personal comment.

Her behaviour had harmed Parliament’s reputation and the principle of mutual respect among Members.

She was denied a visa to Canada after she was asked two questions

  1. Did any country ever deny you a visa? (Yes)

  2. Did you ever face lawsuits? (Yes)

Instead of answering the truth, she answered "No" to both questions.

In an online post, she argued she did that because "I think these questions aren't legitimate".

That was a major mistake

Immigration Canada really doesn't give a shit about what you think.

You should never lie on a federal immigration form. That's called misrepresentation. Any foreigner who engages in misrepresentation will face denial of entry into Canada (Article 40, Canadian Law on Immigration).

When Immigration Canada discovered this, her visitor visa was automatically cancelled.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

Any chance you can provide a source on that? It sounds believable, but it's not mentioned in the article OP posted, and I can't find anything else that confirms it. All reporting I've read says that CBSA refused to comment (as expected, since it concerns private information).

[–] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

People like her that being self righteous assholes makes them exempt from the law.

[–] galaxybe@lemmy.org 4 points 15 hours ago

glorifying terrorism

She was supporting the Israelis?

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

It's strange how this article mentions she is pro-palestiniens and forgot to mention she is from Palestinian decent. Overall this article doesn't provide much information about what has happened and why. Which tweet were used to accuse her ?

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 4 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

She crossed a line praising the Lod massacre perpetrators. It was not an attack on the IDF, it was an indiscriminate attack on random people in an airport.

That said, we live in an era where criminal and genocidal language is spewed by the leaders of Israel, the US, and other countries. If only the same high standards were applied to them too.

[–] crapwittyname@feddit.uk 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

She's praised the perpetrators? When? Can you link it?

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

French here, I think the information is confirmed. A weird campain is led against this woman, and at that point I'd call it harrassment, especially after the far right ambush set-up that led to the even weirder death of a young neo-nazi militant (the local intelligence had been following them, the police was present and they let the fight happen...), which was blamed on her conference being held nearby.

The Nemesis collective was linked to it as a planner of said ambush that went haywire. That femonationalist collective was endorsed by a former right-wing minister of national security.

I really think it's a sordid campain to undermine any french voice that would talk about the genocide in Gaza.

[–] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

How is it a campaign when it's her own words and actions that got her in trouble?

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 4 points 12 hours ago

Because of the repetitive pattern of sham/shallow accusations which goal is only to give the collaborationist media more material for constant defamation (on her, but also on every leftist voice speaking against the genocide in Gaza and such, which is immediately tagged as "antisemitism" for easy silencing -it's a globally used strategy, so nothing unfamiliar here, you've probably seen it used against many people who are raising their voice against Israel's crimes against humanity, or their current expansion war -which they roped the USA into). For instance, she has been summoned by the police for her deleted tweet, and they "found" drugs in her purse, except 1- I won't believe a person summoned to an appointment with the police can be stupid enough to BRING DRUGS in their purse (it was later denied by her lawyer anyway). 2- The info was leaked to collaborationist medias DURING the police custody, which is supposedly both impossible and illegal UNLESS the police themselves leaked something for the medias to gnaw on. And it's always like that. As for the tweet that got her in "trouble", it was okay according to international laws (relative to the right of an occupied/subjected to apartheid nation to bear arms to resist the occupant). So, yeah, in France, the collusion of the ultra-rich and far-right media is established, so much so that most people don't even listen to them anymore. Whatever the country you're from, the fascists have the same modus operandi, so if you hear corporate media say something and the story is too good to be true, then assume it's simply no true, especially during war.

What in the world, why does Israel control what people say? So weird

[–] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 46 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (8 children)

Israel is the West's last great colonial settler project so there has always been a predilection to turning a blind eye to international law in relation their geopolitical affairs. Far right authoritarians are often chummy with Netanyahu because he is living their colonial dream of genocide and displacement.

Why do they control what people say? I'm not sure it goes that far. But the cultural bias apparently runs deep enough in the West to ruin people's lives over it if they dissent.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 32 points 1 day ago

Why do they control what people say? I'm not sure it goes that far.

Pretty sure that's the sole purpose of the Anti-Defamation League

If you say it's because Zionist Jews have money and wield it like a hammer you're 'antisemitic.' But also correct.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Absolutely not. Zionists have a lot of money, but most of those Zionists are not in fact Jews. Western imperialists see their interests aligning with Israel, so they support it with money and influence; it's really that simple. Thinking Israel controls the West is like thinking the hammer controls the carpenter because he doesn't want it stolen.

[–] faust0@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yep. It really puts into perspective when you see that most of the ideological Zionists in the world are evangelical Christians, waiting for the second coming of Jesus.

Literally just a recounting of historical events.

Hassan has previously been questioned by police over similar allegations and has been under investigation since late 2023 for statements related to Hamas following the Oct. 7 attacks.

Sounds line the government is just harassing her

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I'd like to see why Canada first okay'd her visa, then revoked it the day before she was to travel ... because that kind of pull to do that comes from on high.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

"Something went wrong" can someone copy it please?

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Wow, Its a wonder she doesnt get the death penalty for such an egregiously hateful post /s

please don't link to Nazi platforms!

[–] LemmySchpemmy@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

I love that we never get to see the tweet, click bait article

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

I looked, it was deleted so the news sites are only able to paraphrase.

The tweet that she retweeted is posted in this thread, but not whether she had added commentary of her own

Only anti-Semites confuse anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

No. Only Zionists confuse the two.

What was the actual comment she made?

[–] markko@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (4 children)

https://www.reuters.com/world/french-far-left-member-european-parliament-rima-hassan-held-police-custody-2026-04-02/

Rima Hassan, a French far-left member of the European Parliament, was arrested on Thursday over a ‌comment she posted on X last month about an attack on an Israeli airport in the 1970s, her fellow party member Jean-Luc Melenchon said.

The message was related to the 1972 attack by the Japanese Red Army far-left militant group at Lod airport in Tel Aviv, which resulted in 26 deaths.

It seems the media may not know what her exact comment was yet.

I don't believe in arrests for speech, but justifying shooting up an airport is not my idea of anti-imperialism. Unless the case is being misrepresented, in which case fuck whoever made this arrest.

[–] Babalugats@feddit.uk 29 points 1 day ago (10 children)

No doubt this stemmed from here https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/policing-thought-french-bill-renewed-forms-antisemitism-accused-silencing-israel-critics

Israeli people seen to have embedded themselves in almost every (large) countries politics. It's also being noticed and will no doubt cause a massive push back.

Lawmaker, she's a MEP.
So at least the European Parlament should issue a statement.
