MODERATORS
It's still the Confederate army, they never went away. They were defeated, then left alone for a century and half. It's basically a 160 year long insurgency, kind of like Afghanistan, rural uneducated land controlled by faith based extremism. The South never stopped fighting, after the war they just kept waging it by other means.
And currently they're winning.

Looking at the USA, I am very much continuously and uncomfortably reminded of this quote:
