The phrase that I think is going to be jumping out at our allies here in the region is that the Strait of Hormuz is going to open up naturally at the end of this war. That is just not the understanding of anyone here in the Gulf region.

Before the war, 110 ships were passing through every day; Iranian oil was coming out, Iraqi oil, Saudi oil, Qatari gas, passing through a recognized passageway through the middle of the Strait of Hormuz. Today, something like five to 10 ships are passing through every day, and those ships are no longer going unmolested through the middle of the strait.

They are being forced into Iranian waters between a series of islands. This has been nicknamed the Tehran toll booth. The Iranians are inspecting these ships as they come by. They are charging some of them $2 million to pass through, and every indication is that the Iranians want to make this into a long-term arrangement, even after the war continues.

The idea that the U.S. is going to step away and basically leave the Iranians in control of the Strait of Hormuz, in the hope that they are just going to naturally give up this level of control that they have asserted, is going to be very worrying for people here in the Middle East.

...

Trump said in an interview earlier today that he was absolutely considering withdrawing from NATO — a significant step he could not take unilaterally. Trump would potentially have to ask Congress to do that, and right now, there are no indications that something like that could make it through.

Despite that, Trump did not mention that prospect doring his address, though he did have some criticism for these countries, saying he believes they should step up and do more.

...

As Trump addressed the nation, markets reacted negatively to what he had to say about his plan for the war with Iran.

S&P 500 futures slid 0.75%, Nasdaq futures sold off by 1%, and Dow futures dropped more than 310 points.

Oil prices also shot higher, with U.S. crude oil rising from around $98 to nearly $104. Brent, the international oil benchmark, soared from $99 to $106.

The move in oil prices will directly translate into higher gas prices. Already, since the war began Feb. 28, prices at the pump for U.S. consumers have risen from an average $2.46 per gallon to more than $4 today.

For anyone who didn’t watch:

Senile child rapist waddles on stage. He then starts spewing self-aggrandizing bullshit, from which we can infer his word-of-the-day ~~toilet paper~~ baby wipes today was “decimate” (though he doesn’t actually know what it means), all while holding onto the podium for dear life the entire time. He then ends his audiofellatio, but refuses to move until the cameras are off, most likely because he either filled his britches again, or he knows he can’t release his death-grip on the podium until someone brings him his walker

It's insane that the worlds most powerful nation has such an idiot for president. I bet that here in Europe 90% of people feel like the above, and find Trump ridiculous. He is such an embarrassment both to himself, USA and American democracy.
And the worst thing is, that if he dies or is removed within a couple of years, the next in line is JD Vance, and he is even worse!!

[–] ATS1312@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 22 hours ago

Thank you for sparing me the torture of watching

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 52 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Tldr, senile old man says nothing.

We're sending a new carrier to replace the poo fire one, more troops, and a-10 warthogs, which looks a hell of a lot like the start of a ground invasion.

[–] halfpipe@sopuli.xyz 15 points 23 hours ago

How receptive his speech patterns have become should concern us all. Clearly the Stephen Millers and Kushners in his life are the non-elected decision makers in the presidency.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Lol warthogs. There's nothing so silly to fly in s time of manpads.

But gun goes brrrrt! Man babies in charge of war get happy and semi erect.

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm not an enthusiast at all. But I saw a10 and had to laugh because, why? They're fucking awesome for sure. But how can they possibly be viable right now? (srsly tho if they have a use case I'd love to simp for big brrrrrtha)

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Presumably the guys in charge of what equipment to send over know more about what's ideal for what it's gonna be used for than some rando on lemmy.

Then again, maybe that guy was replaced with ChatGPT.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The A10 was quite obsolete in the first gulf war. They are terrible slow and cumbersome. They only really can engage tanks effectively.

They might boost morale for a small bit of front, but it's a rather convoluted and expensive manner to reach that result.

I'll take got over the advice of the current leader of the Ministry of war, though.

Maybe they're trying to get rid of the remaining air frames so they can finally end the platform.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago

My guess, false flag is coming soon to justify escalation and ground assault, while trying to shift how deeply unpopular the war is

[–] Zier@fedia.io 15 points 20 hours ago

Attention whore who raped children captures TV network to brag about fucking everything up.

[–] ButtermilkBiscuit@feddit.nl 8 points 18 hours ago

As others stated here - listening to anything that fat pedophile says is a fools errand. Trump isn't considering a stop to war with Iran, he's sending thousands of military personnel to the region and repositioning assets to support a ground war. He's as cunning as a used condom, most of the time you can bet on the exact opposite of whatever he says will happen (unless you're in his cabinet and can insider trade on non-public information). Watch for a false flag event in the coming days to drum up support for this new initiative. He's going to send poor kids to die while he enriches himself and his Epstein class buddies.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 30 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

None of his addresses matter and nothing he says reflects reality, why are we still focusing on his word instead of just his actions? Listening to him just affords him opportunities to convince you of his lies.

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 16 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Watched an interview today. Maybe pbs news hour. Guy said take a look at Trump's actions. He's sending hundreds of soldiers to Iran, doesn't matter if he says the war might end soon.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 4 points 23 hours ago

Only hundreds? That seems like a very small force.

[–] mister_flibble@sh.itjust.works 9 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Honestly I usually just keep an eye on threads like this when I know he's doing an address juuuuust in case he drops dead in the middle of one someday.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

See that's fair. But dying is also an action, so you are already doing it.

I've never understood why people give others, who they know are dishonest, the chance to successfully lie to them. Deceit is a direct threat to ones understanding of how reality works and your ability to navigate life wisely. Also like, stop explaining to liars why you don't believe them, you're just telling them what they need to improve to better lie to you. You don't 'win' by explaining to them how you know they're lying, you make it harder to catch them next time.

[–] Embargo@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Would anyone argue that this cunt didn't just admit to crippling the world's oil supply to sell oil? They knew this would knockout the strait and here he is recommending that any country affected by the closing should buy from the US. It should be noted that the rest of the speech was riddled with disgusting lies.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Wonder why he's so anti-renewable energy!

[–] Embargo@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago

Fucking rancid.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 8 points 20 hours ago

Funny. The man said a lot, but all I heard was, "Decarbonize now"

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

People still fact check what Trump says? Do they believe they might actually something that is not a blatant, outright lie?
