In a 2020 post, Lemmy's co-creator Dessalines wrote about the origin of the name Lemmy. "It was nameless for a long time, but I wanted to keep with the fediverse tradition of naming projects after animals. I was playing that old-school game Lemmings, and Lemmy (from Motorhead) had passed away that week, and we held a few polls for names, and I went with that."[7]

Then, why does the banner of this community display a lemur?
My thoughts exactly. I had to follow their wiki link to see the lemming mascot (which shows in red with a ? on its forehead right below the lemur). And I thought "oh yeah that thing."
The lemur is the mascot of this community. The lemming is the mascot (and unofficial (?) name for members) of the site.
I played Lemmings when it was new, on the Amiga, and owned a legal copy of it. Got it for a birthday or Christmas one year. I remember the vinyl record style packaging that folded out and had the floppy disk holder inside, though the most memorable floppy disk packaging of the same type was for Chessmaster 2000, also on the Amiga.
Lemurs are smarter than you think!
Therefore, if you call one of them "Lemmy", it decides immediately to become tame. 😃
From a quick youtube search I guess you can, there are a lot of videos of people interacting with lemurs in captivity.
As they are small they can't scratch off your face like chimpanzees. Afaik the problem with feral animals as pets that that they are not reliable, they can forget humans are not a threat.
