Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I'd be tempted but what if I reincarnate into a Republican Congressman? Thats the end of the good karma train.

Only if you got to carry over your past memories, which apparently we don't, assuming it exists. So, how would knowing that it exists change anything?

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see what carrying over memories has to do with it. The idea here is that if you're living a painful or unhappy life then you could just switch over to living a different life that's more pleasant.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The odds are against you. You're probably going to get a much worse life than this one, especially if you're right now able to muse about the concept on the internet.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 1 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Nah, you can just keep respawning as many times as you like until you wind up living a great one

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 2 points 16 hours ago

Once you get old enough to understand, and trust, and have agency. Until then, good luck.

But if you dont have the memories and get born into North Korea... will you ever even find out about reincarnarion?

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca -1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You might be happy being born into north Korea.

Maybe. If it's tied to a kharmic system and not sticking it out led to worse incarnations, that'd probably be a good countering force.

Never underestimate the pull of the devil you know.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I would only do it if I didn’t come back as a human.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Depends on which human. I would love to live a Dick Van Dyke life. He just turned 100 and said his secret to long life is that he's always happy.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah but there will only ever be one Dick Van Dyke.

[–] Beacon@fedia.io 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It was just an example showing it depends on which type of life you wind up in

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I’d still rather be a beetle.

Even Dick had to wear pants.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

“Beetle again?? Pass.”

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 3 points 17 hours ago

Even if there's no karma involved, and which species you get is completely random, chances are you will end up rolling beetle.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Do beetles wear pants and go to work and pay taxes and wage war?

Being a beetle sounds awesome.

I wonder what life as a river otter would be like.

Just for that, I’m going to buy a terrarium, sew a beetle a 3 piece suit and hitch a string to its back and into a gearbox. So long as the beetle is moving, its food mechanism will turn once per 1/10th mile, dispensing 20 pellets. 1/20 pellets will be thrown directly into an incinerator, 1/20 will go to another random beetle outside, 3 pellets will go to the terrarium, and 3/4 will go to the weevils in my cocaine dish. I will force them to suffer as I do.

Any thought out system with reincarnation would penalize you for suicide. I seem to remember that Buddhists believe your next life is determined by your performance in this one. You like climb a ladder of existence, and just being a human as opposed to an ant or something is a sign of long term success climbing that ladder. I dont recall what the top was, some spiritual being probably. Go forth and Google.

[–] bsit@sopuli.xyz 3 points 16 hours ago

Ritual suicide is very much a thing in certain systems that believe in reincarnation. At some points it seen as a perfectly rational and pragmatic choice, but yes, you need to do it with specific practices and intentions. Not just "well, life sucks, I'll just reroll".

[–] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 2 points 17 hours ago

"fuck it, reroll"

[–] Oka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Beacon@fedia.io 1 points 16 hours ago

No way, I'm going first

[–] mr_anny@sopuli.xyz 0 points 17 hours ago

This would fuck up the coming timelines with ridiculous overpopulation.
