Just deleted reddit and working on getting off of facebook. I'm actually glad to be here. It's a bit of an adjustment but I think it's for the better. Cheers everyone.

Congrats and welcome.

Welcome and go fuck yourself /s

[–] TerdFerguson@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

This is correct.

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Welcome aboard Ranger !

Don't ever forget why you left. If you don't like something, be part of the solution.

Hope you have a great time here!

[–] rangerdanger@feddit.online 4 points 23 hours ago

I absolutely intend to and thank you for the encouragement

[–] shadunix@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Welcome aboard!

It's actually quite nice, conversations seem like you can get heard and people are generous with upvotes. It's like Reddit was in 2010, but it's been that way for a couple years (for me) now. I hope it continues.

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Depends on what instance and what opinion you are towing, still. Though it is still a far cry better than Reddit.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's easier to choose and curate for oneself. Blocking comms actually works (even if blocking instances or users doesn't). I don't see any tankie comms anymore, even if I still have to argue with .ml users in comments on other threads.

And even though mods can ban from communities or instances, no automated admin bots can give you a site-wide ban over petty reasons. I can say I hate nazis without getting my entire IP banned for "hate speech"...

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can still get your account nuked by butthurt admins.

Though again, still far better than Reddit.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Really? How? I thought instances had the highest level of control? Or are admins a per-instance thing?

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The admins literally administer the instances. Many of them directly running the instances on hardware they pay for. Even if the API didn't allow it, they could just directly delete your user record from the DB.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Right, exactly, that's my point. None of them can ban you from the fediverse, just their instance.

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Well getting your account that you groomed up for who knows how long nuked is pretty damn close. Especially if you're a main contributor to a comm or two and all that work disappears.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You sound like you've had personal experience with this...

Also, that doesn't change the fact that no instance admins can ban your IP across the whole fediverse, so it's still not as bad as reddit...

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Never said it was as bad as Reddit. I've only said the oposite.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 7 hours ago

Going back to my first comment on this chain:

And even though mods can ban from communities or instances, no automated admin bots can give you a site-wide ban over petty reasons.

So... what part of that has changed?

[–] Yondoza@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Lemmy does seem to have some insular thinking (just like all social media communities). Feels like you can actually have discussion and at least learn why people hold those views instead of just being chastised.

[–] cecilkorik@piefed.ca 43 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Welcome. It's smaller, but the people are better. Most of them, anyway. Sometimes some of them are brilliant and amazing, just like on Reddit. Sometimes some of them suck (sometimes including me) but it's not so overwhelming because there aren't as many. Small is beautiful, even if it is a little quieter than you're used to. You'll get used to it though, and it's better for your mental health.

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 day ago

I love it being smaller. I actually read people's usernames here because there is a non zero chance I run across them again in the future and that makes me happy :3

Welcome! You better pick a favorite Linux distro to argue about in the comments :D

[–] Wav_function@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I don't use Linux but I like mint, it's cool and refreshing and green is a nice color

[–] dimjim@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Rookie move, should've gone with Bazzite, all the cool gamer kids such as myself* use it!

*Disclaimer: I am neither cool nor a kid lol.

[–] rangerdanger@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

cachy is actually awesome for gaming! only thing that it lacks is basically what every distro lacks which is the anti cheat games. otherwise it's solid!

[–] dimjim@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I know, I only kid. Tbh I'm actually somewhat considering trying it out, I've been on Bazzite for a few months now after distro hopping a bunch, but I've heard good things and I'm curious now lol

[–] Jerry@feddit.online 35 points 2 days ago

We're glad you are here!

I deleted my Facebook after downloading all of my files, same with reddit. Never going back. Currently dropping Google as much as I can and it has been a major headache figuring things out and transferring... I think it'll be worth it. Wish a lot more people would do the same.

[–] frischkaesbagett@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you are willing to talk about it I am genuinely interested where you migrate to - away from google. What services did you use most?

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not OP, but in progress as well

Email is pretty easy.

Google docs is less easy if you need to collaborate with people professionally, but you can always go back to PDF, email, and openoffice to a point

Android phone is hard, I could go to Apple, but I don't really like them any more than Google. I have drones and cameras that only want to talk through Android/iOS. Losing my Android app purchases is a bit bitter.

Pay-to-tap is hard. I can move to Garmin eventually, but they're really expensive, and there's only like one model that's good for it. I can always just use my credit card to tap through.

Non-Apple/Android Bluetooth watches are underwhelming or expensive AF (Garmin, for example, still requires Apple or Android for the initial setup and is expensive).

OAUTH is a major sticking point. I log in to a LOT of stuff with my Google ID.

I also have a legacy Google Workspace; they host my domain email, my domain OAuth, and my family calendar is all over there. They're all sharing through it.

There's no good replacement for Waze. No crowd-sourced traffic is good at routing you from state to state around large metro areas. There are loads of maps. but nothing dependable for anything other than a short ish trip.

[–] terabyterex@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

have you read about graphene OS? its an android replacement. currtly works on pixel phones but motorolla recently announced that they will be actively supporting it

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

I've looked at every last option. Unfortunately, All my crap is on ATT Samsung. I'm waiting for some linux maturity or for google to finish playing their hand before i trade in my very nice camera for privacy

[–] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 2 days ago

Welcome! This is a real place with real people. Far less rage bait and bots.

[–] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Welcome in! There's lots to enjoy about Lemmy. Hope you come to see it's value over time.

If you have any questions, like how federation (i.e. Fediverse) works or how to block, let me know!

[–] green_goglin@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 day ago

Welcome aboard, stranger.

[–] spacemanspiffy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Off topic but your username almost matches my current DnD character: Ranger Dangerfield, a level 6 Ranger.

Welcome, friend :).

[–] rangerdanger@feddit.online 3 points 1 day ago

Love me some d&d friend. have fun!

[–] amos@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

Welcome!

Please, help growing Lemmy/PieFed. Create content and engage!

[–] speedythefirst@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 days ago

Heck yeah! I've been trying to actively make the switch too. Getting away from big-tech algorithmically-driven social media platforms feels very nice. I do miss a few of the communities I was a part of that don't have a counterpart here, but I'll get used to it eventually.

The community here is much nicer than reddit currently is. It feels more tight-knit. Almost like reddit was twelve or thirteen years ago.

[–] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In Australia, your username is a reference to dangerous Ford Ranger car drivers.

[–] rangerdanger@feddit.online 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I did not know this but this is very funny!

Welcome!

Keep in mind there's no algorithm pushing things on us here, so it's best to seek out and subscribe to as many communities as you have interests. :) If there's a niche community on Reddit that you miss having here, consider making it yourself. Also, the most you can post and comment the better!

One thing that's nice about the Fediverse compared to corporate social media is that there is far less bullshit, fewer ancient reposts by people pretending to post original content, almost no AI slop, etc... It's really nice, in my opinion. Reddit certainly has a larger quantity of stuff, but I think modernly the quality has become quite low.

Nice to have you.

Welcome! You’ll see the same people over and over again, but it’s really nice.

Enjoy your time and contribute! I only try to contribute with comments and not too much content, but maybe eventually.

[–] hitstun@feddit.online 5 points 1 day ago

Welcome, fellow PieFed user! Our group is smaller, but that means you can have a bigger impact here. If you don't see enough of a type of content, try to post some here yourself. A little push can send us far.

[–] etherphon@piefed.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hey welcome, we got everything here.. linux, socks, goths, furries, tankies, weed, owls, cozy memes, you know pretty much all your basics.

[–] rangerdanger@feddit.online 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm definitely here for the linux and the furries lol. I use arch btw.
