I also preordered the Jolla phone. I don't like the direction Google is taking android and i like supporting a pure european phone, and im working on Linux a lot these days.

My POV (having not used a Jolla phone) is that it's likely to be less convenient than GrapheneOS (I do use Graphene). I understand SailfishOS has an android compatibility layer but I assume there will be random apps that don't work well with it (Graphene isn't free of this either). That said, I want consumers to have more options, which means there needs to be early adopters willing to accept limitations or inconvenience to build up the ecosystem of alternatives, so if you're willing to do that, I think you should. I realize this is selfish in some ways, but it's also good in the bigger picture.
I wouldn't be surprises if the Motorola phone gets heavily delayed and eventually cancelled (I have no inside knowledge, but have been hopeful about too many things that get cancelled to be optimistic until it's widely available). As such, I think another benefit of Jolla is it's more likely that you'll get one (in a reasonable time).
Ty Lee, good points!
Tldr: GrapheneOS for Normie apps, Jolla for FOSS exclusive phone.
IMO take GrapheneOS, because when it comes to security, there is basically no competition. You need the security if you want to use normie proprietary apps. There is just so much cancer in that ecosystem, it is unbelievable, furthermore, you're handing the malware an unbelievably capable sensor platform with centimetre accurate positioning systems, motion sensors which can gauge your weight, age and gender, microphones and cameras. You NEED the protection that GrapheneOS gives you.
On the other hand, if you only want to use FOSS on your phone, then SailfishOS is also a good choice. But due to security, it is highly recommended that you stay away from normie apps.
Haven't heard that take yet, thanks for your comment
Given we need alternatives, and the fact that Graphene is still Android, which is controlled by Google. I would go with Jolla and SailfishOS.
which is controlled by Google
That's not correct. GrepheneOS is based on AOSP and not Googles version of the software. Graphene have full control over everything that they add or remove in their version as it is open source. They don't need to worry really about how google restricts apps etc. But the app developers may have to create a non google compliant version or refuse to. But the same may apply to SailfishOS. As mentioned here, they will now likely be building their own device trees, but the Motorola partnership may actually help with that.
Saying that, this is a Buy European community, and Jolla is the only European independent smartphone available, so they could never be regulated by restrictions that may apply to devices built outside Europe. That's not to say that (for example) US big tech lobbying in the EU couldn't affect them, and remove any privacy. But not something that we need to worry about right now.
AOSP is made by Google. If Google decides to make something like app permissions worse again, that goes to AOSP, and is an extra burden for forks to deal with. Graphene already has to maintain a parallel system for storage permissions.
Control is limited by resources and compatibility. Google decides what goes in AOSP, so they could just design some changes that are difficult to revert or fix without breaking apps.
I appreciate graphene, etc. but it's like moving from chrome to just another chromium browser. We need real alternatives.
Wait, is SailfishOS not Android based??
Oh, snap! I fell asleep on this! I didn't realize it was a Linux phone!
Daaaamn it! I just bought a Fairphone.....
This is what happens when every android skin is an "OS"
Well, there's a chance your fairphone will get a sf port
Oh, snap!
Canonical is not involved though :)
That's even better!
i would wait and see if jolla actually ships the devices this time before giving them any money
Cheers for your imput!
Motorola with GrapheneOS for me because: I don't have the money to make a choice, and I already know GrapheneOS well enough. BUT if I had more freedom to choose, I would keep my old phone and try Jolla with Linux. I know that it's not a useful answer, but in the past I have always switched between multiple Linuxes, or between iOS and Android, and it gave me a good experience and comparison in this ever changing landscape.
If I were you, I would keep the Jolla for 2 or 3 years and try to understand how it's better or worse than the other OS. As long as you properly backup your files, emails, passwords, and calendars, switching back to GrapheneOS or anything else shouldn't be a problem.
Last but not least, the Motorola phone may not be available immediately, which means it's not a choice for anyone right now. Don't be a slave to the FOMO mindset.
Thanks for your perspective. I fell I need to make clear I don't own the Jolla yet, I've pledged and put up some money, but I could still hold out. I need to decide on my order per april 30th.
But thanks for your imput! Well written and well reasoned
Jolla/Sailfish is perhaps more practical. (Myself, I am using Linux phones since Nokias N900, of which Jolla is a new start from former Nokia employees, formed after Microsoft bought Finland's Nokia and nuked its Linux developments). Also, Sailfish / Maemo / Mer / MeeGo is mostly open source, it is an RPM-based Linux system which unlike Android OS is maintained by an Open Source community.
What is proprietary in Sailfish is some UI components. The bigger problem, however, are firmware and drivers since ARM systems do not have a BIOS or UEFI system, and firmware is often non-free.
Thanks Harald, very insightful!
You are welcome!
Still got my n900 :) The SoC hasnโt been named (I think) but it will likely contain closed source binary blobs for the GPU at least if itโs CSF, JM based Mali did not have firmware
SoC was announced, it is the Mediatek Dimensity 7100
Damn I want the Jolla phone but I'm in the US. Anyone with experience with a jolla phone in the US?
You could try it and let us know! ๐
Yeah I should.....
Could be a sick review in the making, and hopefully the community can find any working solutions to problems. Like changing phone providers.
How polished of an experience do you need? AFAIK there is no esim support with Jolla phones yet, which is crucial for me.
At this moment there is no real competition to GrapheneOS in terms of privacy, security, and overall maturity. I would suggest to buy a second hand Pixel 7a or newer.
If you can please also keep supporting Linux alternatives. I wish there was more political will to fund alternatives outside the US
Great points. Im adamant in not buying a pixel, so that's out.
I wan't to support Jolla, yet I really want to get aboard the Moto. That could be a year out, though, but supporting both is a bit rich for my blood. Hence the question.
The used Pixel recommendation was just a short-term quick-fix until the Motorola becomes available, while still making sure to not give any money to Google. Once the Motorola is available it could go back to secondary market.
I respect if you don't want to deal with Pixel devices at all though. Then Jolla might be the better way. If Jolla does everything you need right now I would say go for it. Maybe look up some in-depth review videos to make sure beforehand.
Played around with the PinePhone, but was not yet ready to be my daily driver ~2 years ago. Currently only GrapheneOS does everything that I need from a daily driver - exceptionally well. Which forces me to use Pixel devices. I'll happily switch to Motorola once that's out.
Iโm jealous that you have access to the Jolla phone
Not Jolla, but Fairphone is accessible here https://www.clove.co.uk/collections/smartphones-fairphone/products/fairphone-gen-6
