Be careful sharing secret camp spot pics. Geo guessers show up and they're all like "so I zoomed in and noticed the infamous 83 spot spotted beetle whose range only extends 13 square feet in any given direction from this exact spot, but I wanted to be accurate instead of so loose with my guess, so I did some research on that exact cloud in the sky and compared it with what we know about this hyper local species of dandelion I can see in the far left of the second image, and I have it narrowed down to 12 square inches somewhere in western bumblefuck, Arkansas. I'm sorry I couldn't get any closer, hopefully someone can come in with a better guess!"

Damn it! Western Bumblefuck is one of my favorite camping places and you've gone and told the whole world.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago

I'm very sorry. But to make it up to you I know a sweet little patch of land perfect for camping. It's about halfway between BFE and You Gotta Purdy Mouf, just north of Cousin Fuck, Mississippi.

Speaking as someone from somewhere in West Bumblefuck, AR... That looks more like Kansas.. lol

It's 7800km from Kansas. I believe that the US state with the closest climate would be Minnesota.

Hei.

Sisu.

And, that’s all the Finnish I know. As a native English speaker, Finnish and other Scandinavian languages look very scary to me.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 8 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Paska traktori and vasara kalakeitossa are useful phrases to keep in mind as well.

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not to forget kiveskiertymä

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You have one single word for this! Finnish is so efficient. :D

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's exactly the same as in English, but the 2 words are stocked together

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

You have blown my mind. I had no idea.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Vasara kalakeitossa might be my new favorite phrase of all time.

[–] Kepion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Hyvaa yöta :D

Here's a new word for your finnish repetoire:

Perkele!

Put some feeling into it when you say it.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is a good one. I feel like I will use this.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can use this to assist with the pronunciation.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I already taught all my coworkers.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That was a surprisingly close guess, then. I was gonna guess Hoth in springtime.

[–] Marafon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Ah, I see! You did call it miserable twice though, and Kansas certainly fits that description

I spent roughly 2 hours getting into geoguessing...

I did some quick and easy ones, with like obvious signs and stuff. After spending 30 minutes tracking down flight info based on the time the photo was taken, I decided I didn't have the dedication for such things and if I couldn't figure it out in 2 minutes based on signs and landmarks, I'm okay with not knowing the exact location a picture was taken.

Hats off to the stalker-level people who can pinpoint the specific 30ft area in a cornfield a video was taken based on time of day, the color of the dirt, a specific toad croak at 12m37s into the video, etc....

People can be oddly respectful of wood piles. Back in autumn, I bought some cheap firewood and planned a burn at a local park (which has fire pits) with my girlfriend, but the weather didn’t work out in the end. We piled the logs next to the bathroom building, expecting them to disappear over time.

Months later, in very late winter, my girlfriend and I went back. To our absolute shock, the pile of firewood was still lying against the building, seemingly untouched.

The park is very popular, with events almost every weekend, even in the winter. I guess people saw the wood pile, assumed it was put there for some official purpose, and thought they shouldn’t touch it?

We ended up burning about half the logs that day. I wonder if the rest are still there.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 10 points 2 days ago

I've left logs there before too and they've mostly been left untouched, though there have been signs of people visiting. However, I suspect those are mostly fishermen who come by boat and I bet many of them bring their own firewood.

I've been considering buying a cheap saw and an axe too and just leaving them there. Partly as a hint that they're free to contribute.

And when my sister gets to a campground, the first thing she does is scavenge empty sites for firewood that was left behind.

[–] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 days ago

OUR secret camp spot.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 11 points 2 days ago

Wider shot of the spot. Kind of a small headland sticking out to the lake. Obviously much nicer once the nature wakes up.

[–] Beth@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago

The mud pits are a test of strength!

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 6 points 2 days ago

Well, most likely you will be the poor fucker.

Or you'll show up next time to a little thank you note and a small box with a single beer inside.

I guess you couod show up to all the wood gone, but fingers crossed!

I too talk shit about myself whenever I'm being proactive about chores or tasks. What the fuck has future me ever done for present me? That guy's an asshole.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

You're the man OP. (Or lady, whatever).

As a fellow hiker, I would be delighted to stumble on this.

[–] protist@retrofed.com -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What did those trees do to you 😢

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's dead trees from the ground. Green wood doesn't burn very well.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

looks at forest for green wood

"Where in the Oz is that shit?"
