If you mean why is it so prevalent in media, it is because it is the last experience that almost everyone had in common so it is a touchstone

I am not at all nostalgic for high school, it was a nightmare. Don't know anyone in real life who thinks it was a good part of their life.

It's a common setting for stories from all over, though. Coming - of - age stories are eternally popular. And here, kids are in high school as they transition from child to adult, so that's where many of those stories are set.

It was a time when a lot of people had way fewer responsibilities and were getting their first taste of freedom. Same for college for a lot of folks.

because the working world life sucks trump in the us and so high school is often the last thing before that. Some go to college but many of those its half work, half school, and can fall apart into a flaming trump.
